Transfer Advising Notes for American University, DC

Back to MC Transfer Page

General Admissions Notes for MC Students

Who is a Transfer Student?  If you have earned fewer than 24 credits and have a competitive college GPA, you will also need to submit a final high school transcript and SAT I scores. You must meet the GPA and SAT I requirements for freshman applicants if you have less than 24 credits completed.

In all cases, transfer applicants (24 credits or more) who wish to be considered as competitive candidates for admission should have at least a GPA of 2.5/4.0 at their current institution.

Several AU schools have more rigorous GPA requirements. To declare a major in the following fields, you must have a minimum GPA of: School of International Service (3.00/4.00); School of Education (2.70/4.00); School of Communication (2.50/4.00); Kogod School of Business (2.50/4.00).

College Writing and English Competency Requirement & University Mathematics Requirement  www.american.edu/american/registrar/geninfo/undergradrequirements.htm

All students must be able to write with a level of mastery equal to the demands of college course work.
In addition, students need to acquire the critical reading skills necessary in all their courses.

Students who transfer to American University may satisfy this requirement in one of the following ways:

·         Transferring 6 credit hours of acceptable composition credit from another institution and passing
American University 's English Competency Examination.  ( Montgomery College ’s EN 101 & EN 102)

·         Transferring 3 credit hours of acceptable composition credit from another institution and passing the
first course in the college writing sequence with a 'C' or better or taking the second course in the college
writing sequence and passing  American University's English Competency Examination.

University Mathematics Requirement

American University
requires that all students demonstrate skills in college-level mathematics and quantitative
reasoning. Students must enroll in an appropriate mathematics course in the first or second semester of
full-time study, or satisfy the requirement through examination, as specified in the American University catalog.

Transfer students and graduates of secondary schools outside the United States may satisfy the University
Mathematics Requirement in one of the following ways:

·         Transferring a course titled 'Calculus I' or a mathematics course for which 'Calculus I' is a prerequisite,
with a grade of B or better, from an AG-rated collegiate institution, taken prior to enrolling at
American University .

·         Passing an examination given by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics demonstrating
competence equivalent to MATH-15x Finite Mathematics, MATH-211 Applied Calculus I or
STAT-202 Basic Statistics. Only one of these exams may be taken and that exam may be taken
only once, during the student's first semester. Eligible students should contact the Department of
Mathematics and Statistics for more information about the Mathematics and Statistics Equivalency Exam.

·         Passing MATH-15x Finite Mathematics, MATH-211 Applied Calculus I, STAT-202 Basic Statistics, or a
course that lists one of these courses as a prerequisite after beginning their study at AU.

Montgomery College Advising Notes for Prospective AU Students:  Students who complete the math requirement
at MC for a specific major must still prove math competency at American University in one of the ways mentioned
above.  For example, a business major who completes MA 160, Elementary Applied Calculus, and MA 116, Elements
of Statistics, will be asked to take the AU Mathematics competency test upon entry to American University.
Based on test results, the student will then enroll in a college-level math course at AU (if testing indicates eligibility).
This course could be a finite math class, similar to MC's MA 110 Survey of College Mathematics, or any other course
chosen with the help of an AU adviser.  Once a college-level math course has been completed at American University,
credit from MA 160 and MA 116 will be accepted as requirements for the major.

An alternate method of proving math competence at AU is to complete MA 181, Calculus I, at Montgomery College
prior to transfer.  Native students at AU do not have to take a Calculus I course unless their major requires it.
Transfer students have the option of taking math at American after transfer.  Preparing for the Mathematics Placement
exam at AU prior to transfer is recommended.  MC developmental math courses up to MA 100, while not transferable,
will prepare students for the AU math test.  Check the AU catalog to see exactly which math course is required for
your specific major or majors of interest.
