Educational Planning Module

Introduction

Some students select college courses randomly, arrive at sixty credits (enough credits for an Associates degree) and are shocked to find that they have not selected the appropriate courses for their MC degree. Don't be one of them. Pay particular attention to the information in this module so you know why you are choosing each course, what requirements it fulfills and how it will help you attain your educational goals.

Objectives

Students will:

  • learn essential MC policies needed to complete their academic goals.
  • learn how to develop an educational plan and select courses to complete that plan.

Lecture Materials

New college students sometimes question whether or not it is important to complete a college degree.

There is no question that your level of education is related to your potential income.

Don't get me wrong.  I think there is far more value to a college education than knowing that more education equals more income.  However, I have found students are particularly interested in how much money they might make with various majors and degrees.  With that in mind, let's learn what it takes to earn an MC degree.

Here are the steps to completing the Educational Planning Assignment

Step 1

Complete the Online Education Planning Workshop located on the Online Student Services Center at:http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studevgt/onlinsts/

Pause the workshop and fill out the Course Planning form.

Step 2 Use this form and whatever resources you need to enter the courses you will need to complete your MC educational goal.  For this assignment, choose one of following educational goals:
  • Transfer Studies Certificate
  • Transfer Associate's Degree (AA, AS, AAT, AFA)
  • Career Associate's Degree (AAS)

Step 3 Copy and paste the appropriate advising sheet into a word document from this website http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studevgt/advisingsheets2.htm

Step 4 Select all the courses you will take to complete your educational goal.  You will earn 15 points for selecting the most appropriate courses to place on the advising sheet you selected Step 3.  You grade will be based on how completely and specifically you have selected and placed the courses.

Step 5 Now take the courses you selected to complete the Advising Sheet and fill out the Course Planning Form.  Think about creating balanced semesters making sure you have the pre-requisites for the courses you select.  Your  grade (5 points) is based on how completely you have set out a plan to finish this degree.

Step 6 Copy and paste the Advising Sheet to the bottom of this document and submit your assignment in the Assignment Drop,

Assignment

Make an appointment with me to go over your Educational Plan.  My preference is to meet with you in person, but if that is not possible, we can have a telephone meeting.

Discussion

Share a summary of your educational goals, including your preliminary college major and transfer college ideas on the Discussion Board.  Read each other's educational plan summaries.  This is a great way to find out who has similar interests and goals.  Ask each other questions - pick each other's brains. 3 points for the summary and 2 points for responding to the summaries of two other students.
