Transfer Advising Updates for Montgomery College Advisors                               July 2007

Transferring Terrapins - MTAP

All students who indicate an interest in transferring to the University of Maryland, College Park should be encouraged to enroll NOW in the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program. The web address for applications & more information is simple:  www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP

  • Summary of benefits:
    • provides early advising for UMCP majors
    • early identification to UM that this student wants to become a Terp
    • guarantees admission to UM after completion of 30 credits (the Transfer Studies Certificate) or 60 credits (with an AA degree) and a cumulative GPA of 3.0
    • students may take a course at UM, one per semester, total of 3, at a reduced tuition rate (75%).  This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to go into specialized programs that have Gateway courses offered only at UM, such as Architecture - ARCH 242 Basic Architectural Drawing, after completion of CT 170 @ MC; Education [ EDCI 280 for non-AAT completers only], Computer Science [CMSC 106, CMSC 131]; Animal Science [ANSC 101].
    • MTAP applies to programs at both College Park and Shady Grove campuses.

Note that MTAP does not guarantee admission into UM's Limited Enrollment Programs - additional requirements apply for these programs.

MTAP applications are turned in to any Admissions Office at Montgomery College.   Montgomery College advisors are expected to begin assisting students with academic planning in the first semester (see the MTAP Advising page for detailed advising links - find answers to questions like "What AP credits & scores are accepted at UM?".  MTAP page:  www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP

UMBC BOUND?  TSA is the Way

UMBC's Transfer Student Alliance (TSA) www.montgomerycollege.edu/TSA  provides some similar benefits as the program above, but raises the stakes with a $1,500 per year scholarship and guaranteed housing for students who complete an AA at MC and who have a 3.5 GPA.  Read all about TSA benefits and encourage students considering UMBC to apply for the TSA program now.

Transfer Agreements - What's the Commitment ?

Students can enroll in one, or both of the transfer agreement programs above (MTAP, TSA) without an obligation to attend a specific school.  These programs allow students to signal their interest in a particular school or schools and receive additional transfer advising, but both programs require no obligation to attend.  With each program, students will still have to complete a Transfer Application for Admission when it's time to transfer.

The Business of Business Advising
Business is booming at the Robert H. Smith School, University of Maryland College Park - both Main and Shady Grove campuses - so much so that early advising is critical to admissions success.

As expected, competition for seats at UMCP's Smith - Main Campus this Fall 2007 increased dramatically, in turn, making Shady Grove the Plan B for Main Campus students who were not admitted Smith - Main Campus.  Over 90 "College Park" students have been accepted at Shady Grove for this Fall 2007 in the 160 seats available in all majors.  These are students who started as freshmen at College Park.  Smith/Shady Grove is no longer the domain of Montgomery College transfer students...

What does it take to get into Smith?  Besides a terrific grade point average (realistically, a 3.5 or higher), each student's application is examined for evidence of leadership activities, work experience and a willingness to take challenging courses.  This is information that incoming freshmen at MC must know.  Involvement in activities should begin early on.  The Smith Advising Page states this clearly.  The student who owns a thriving business and who has a 3.2 may still find a way into Smith, but the majority of students accepted are those who have excelled in the classroom.

Students should also have a Plan B ready.  Many students are attracted to Smith because it's nearby, it's reasonably priced as a state school, and because of its growing reputation.  But Smith is not the only way to succeed in business.

Students often ask, "Will a degree from _______ be as respected/meaningful/marketable as one from Smith?"
The answer is really in several parts:  yes, if  a student has completed an internship or cooperative work experience within the field, yes if a student shows great performance in the classroom, and yes if a student networks with professors and fellow students.  Students with strong internship experience have a distinct edge regardless of where their degree is from or what their major was.  If Smith is not in the stars, some creative brainstorming with advisors at Montgomery College and at transfer institutions can still make a career in business a reality.

Navigating the MC Transfer Page   www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer

Well, you know how it goes with old dogs and new tricks... The new MC Transfer Page has a student-friendly face, but for those of you who still remember the Old School version, you can still find it on the Left Column - titled "Site Map".  This version is divided up by topics rather than transfer steps.   Find a link to this Advisor's Update there -
