ADVISING SECOND-SEMESTER FRESHMEN ADMITS (Spring Admits) FOR
THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK

High school seniors who have been admitted to UMCP for Spring, 2007 are starting to register for classes at MC for Fall 2006. These students have been advised to take some classes at a community college during the Fall semester, but their admission to UMCP is not dependent on a performance review of grades from Fall at the community college.  Here's what UM tells Spring Admits.

Important Notes:

  • MC's EN 101 will transfer to UMCP only as a lower-level elective. UMCP does not administer English placement tests to students, so these students will be able to enroll in UMCP's ENGL 101 when they arrive in the spring. They can take EN 101 with us if they want to improve writing skills; however, they need to understand that it will not satisfy an English requirement at UMCP.  EN 101 will transfer as elective credit.  A good question to ask students is, "Do your essays and papers in high school usually come back with a lot of corrections?  If so, you may want to consider taking EN 101 to be ready for freshman English at College Park."
  • Math - UMCP does give a math assessment test to all incoming students. Even though MC's MA 100 and lower courses do not transfer, it may be to a student's advantage to take one of those courses with us if their MC placement test indicates a need. They should be advised to do some kind of preparation on their own for a UMCP test if they elect not to take math with us.  Here's a link to UM's Math Placement Testing information.
  • Use ARTSYS pages AND the UMCP Four Year plans to advise for course choices.  Print out courses suggestions from this chart showing all UM majors.
  • Use a CORE list to select MC courses that fulfill CORE requirements at UMCP. Because these students technically "belong" to UMCP, they should take CORE courses rather than any course from the MC Gen Ed Program. This list gives specific MC course CORE choices for UMCP Second Semester Freshman Admits
  • In general, you may want to suggest that students consider taking courses at MC that are typically large lecture courses at College Park - lab science, PY, SO, math, history, etc.
