A Guide to Developing Articulation Agreements
| Many of the articulation agreements that Montgomery College now enjoys were pioneered by faculty members and counselors while others are the result of letters of interest either submitted to the College from four-year institutions or submitted by the College to four year institutions. Formulating and executing articulation agreements falls within the purview of the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Services. If you are interested in exploring the feasibility of executing an articulation agreement with a four-year institution, these are the following procedures: |
| Step 1 | Contact the Director of Academic and Students Services to determine whether there is an articulation agreement already in place with the institution. |
| Step 2 | If there is an articulation agreement already in place with the institution, ask if there is a programmatic alignment in place for the course of study in which you are interested. A standard format has been developed for the general agreements to facilitate modification. |
| Step 3 | If there is no general agreement in place, then ask the Director to research the possibility of executing such an agreement with the express purpose of appending a programmatic alignment. If an agreement is in place, you can begin the process for programmatic alignment. |
| Step 4 | Once the overarching articulation agreement is memorialized with a four year institution, interested departments should begin the programmatic alignment by contacting the dean and/or chair of the hosting department at the institution to start the inquiry process. |
| Step 5 | Once you have identified
a contact person and established mutual interest in a programmatic
alignment, a course by course review of each department’s requirements
should be undertaken. Optimally, the review will result in an agreement by
and between the two departments to accept the courses in our catalog for
the A.A., A.A.S or the A.A.T as the equivalent of the first two years of
the course of study in the specified major. Typically, a programmatic
alignment will result in the four-year institution’s agreement to accept
the transfer of a approximate 60 credit hours and student matriculation as
a junior. Sample programmatic alignments are available from the Director of Student and Academic Services’ office. |
| Step 6 | If appropriate, a meeting may be scheduled between the four-year institution and College representatives in a particular area. The Director can assist in arranging that meeting. |
| Step 7 | Once a draft of the proposed programmatic alignment has been completed, send it to the Director for review. He or she will review the proposed alignment and either contact you for suggested revisions or finalize the agreement for signing. |
| Step 8 | One original signed agreement is retained by the receiving institution and one is retained by Montgomery College. The original signed document is stored in the office of the Academic EVP. |
| Step 9 | If deemed appropriate, the Director and the Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Services can arrange a formal signing ceremony with the appropriate press release and a reception. |
| Step 10 | Once the articulation agreement has been signed. A follow-up thank you letter should be sent to all participants. |
