Changes at University of Maryland, College Park
UMCP has made significant changes in the Life Science and Chemistry curricula. Take a look at the notes below. For additional information, see the College of Chemical & Life Sciences Information for Community College Students page at http://chemlife.umd.edu/p-undergraduate/community-college.html.
*Along with biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus courses, students are recommended to take both courses of any 2-course sequence at the same school as the courses may not match up topic by topic as well.
Biology Core Courses:
- BSCI 105 (Principles I)
- BSCI 106 (Principles II)
- BSCI 207 (Principles III)
- BSCI 222 (Principles of Genetics).
BI 107 will still transfer as BSCI 105 and BI 108 will still transfer as BSCI 106. BI 209 or BI 222 transfer as BSCI 222. MC does not offer the equivalent of BSCI 207 (Principles III – a new innovative-type organismal biology course), so students will have to take that course at UMCP. Students who wish to take BSCI 207 at UMCP may do so through the MTAP program, where students may take one course at UMCP while enrolled at MC. See www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP for details.
Chemistry Courses:
- CHEM 131 General Chemistry I
- CHEM 131 General Chemistry I lab
- CHEM 231 Organic Chemistry I
- CHEM 232 Organic Chemistry I lab
- CHEM 241 Organic Chemistry II
- CHEM 242 Organic Chemistry II lab
- CHEM 271 General Chemistry and Energetics
- CHEM 272 Bioanalytical Chemistry lab
As MC requires both semesters of general chemistry (CH 101 and CH 102) as prerequisites for organic chemistry, it is best to consult with a Biology department at Montgomery College or UMCP for guidance.
MC students who have completed CH 101, CH 102, CH 203, and CH 204 will have to take CHEM 272 (but not CHEM 271) at UMCP to complete the chemistry requirement for the Life Science major at UMCP. Students who wish to take CHEM272 at UMCP may do so through the MTAP program, where students may take one course at UMCP while enrolled at MC. See www.montgomerycollege.edu/MTAP for details. |
