Create a Transfer Plan -
Choose courses that will transfer smoothly.
  • Meet with a Montgomery College counselor to develop a plan of action for transfer.  (Does this sound familiar?  It should!)
  • Together with an MC counselor, or on your own, use the following resources to identify courses to take at the school(s) you hope to attend:
  1. ARTSYS If your school is a Maryland public four-year institution, use ARTSYS to print out a list of suggested courses to take at MC (a Recommended Transfer Program page, or RTP).

ARTSYS:  The Maryland Transfer Articulation System

ARTSYS provides students and advisers with course equivalencies, MC courses recommended for specific majors, and a search for majors in Maryland. Students can also enter their courses & grades in the Transcript Evaluation function to determine course equivalencies at transfer institutions.

The following Maryland institutions participate in ARTSYS:  Univ. of Baltimore, Bowie, Capitol College, College of Notre Dame, Coppin, Frostburg, Goucher, Hood, Johns Hopkins School of Continuing Education, Morgan, Salisbury, St. Mary's College of MD, Towson, Univ. of MD - Baltimore (UMB), UMBC, UMCP (College Park), UM - Eastern Shore, UM - University College, Villa Julie College, Washington College, and McDaniel College.

Using ARTSYS to Look Up Recommended Courses to Take at MC

How to use ARTSYS:

  • Main Page - click on Recommended Transfer Programs.

  • Next, change Sending Institutions to MONTGOMERY COLLEGE and Receiving Institutions to the school of your choice.  Click Submit.

  • On the Recommended Transfer Program Lookup Page, LEAVE the MAJOR KEYWORD box BLANK.  Click Next.

  • You should see a full list of all of the majors available at the school.  Click on the one that interests you.

~ ~ Note:  Information on ARTSYS printouts changes with database updates.  KEEP all copies of ARTSYS printouts in a file, and check the system each semester as you plan for classes to stay up with admissions changes.

2.  Use the college catalog from the Maryland institution that you're investigating to verify that the courses suggested on ARTSYS seem reasonable.  While ARTSYS is generally up-to-date, changes in course requirements can occur before the ARTSYS database is updated, so take this task on your own to be sure that you're meeting major requirements.  An MC counselor can assist you with this.

If your school is not located in Maryland, or is a private school in Maryland not included in ARTSYS, use a current undergraduate catalog from each school to identify these important areas:

  • Courses that satisfy General Education, "Core" or "University Distribution" requirements AND
  • Courses required for the specific major(s) of interest to you.

You can find a copy of the undergraduate catalog for most schools right on their websites.  If a link isn't apparent right away, use the "Search" function and type in "catalog."  Another relatively reliable way to find a catalog is to use Google and type in (for example):
"Warren Wilson College catalog" - something usually pops up!

If you're unsure of what courses are actual equivalents, you should contact the school directly to be advised.  One good way to do this is to e-mail the admissions department of the school with your questions, cutting and pasting MC course descriptions into the body of your message so admissions staff can look directly at the course(s) in question.  This way you also have their response in writing, something you should keep in your records.  Make a folder to keep all of your college search materials together.
