Sherman STEM Teaching Scholarships - UMBC
Science Technology Engineering Math

We are delighted to inform you of an exciting new initiative at UMBC, the Sherman STEM Teacher Training Program. You may have heard or seen references to this news in the Baltimore Sun, and you are no doubt aware of the recent “Rising Above the Gathering Storm” report from the national Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy, a report that has garnered much attention and makes the Sherman Teacher Training Program especially timely. This program will recruit highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines who have an interest in teaching in high-needs schools in the greater Baltimore area.  Graduated funding of up to $10,000 annually for undergraduates, as well as funding for graduate fellowships, will be awarded on a competitive basis.

The Sherman Family Foundation has committed $5 million to UMBC toward preparing highly qualified teachers in STEM areas for Maryland classrooms. With this support, we will be able to develop innovative programming that leverages our strengths in science, technology, math, and engineering with our capabilities in teacher training. When fully endowed, the Sherman STEM Teacher Training Program will position UMBC as one of the nation’s leading institutions for training STEM teachers.

Rehana Shafi, who is coordinating the Sherman STEM Teacher Training Program, is working with us in the Admissions Office to recruit students into this program.  She is available to speak with you, your interested students, and faculty members and to conduct classroom presentations or staff information tables.  She can be reached via phone at (410) 455-1736 or email at rshafi@umbc.edu.  Please do not hesitate to contact her with any questions or requests you may have.
