Welcome, Freshman - It's Not Too Early to Start Planning for Your Next Move!

Welcome to Montgomery College— and now it’s time to plan for transferring -
even though you've just arrived!  You won't be at Montgomery College forever...
When  your goal is to graduate from a four-year institution with a bachelor’s degree, it’s important to start thinking about when and where you’ll transfer.

When you’ll transfer - you have a few options:

 · Transfer after One Year – most students in this category will need to earn 30 credits, or two/three semesters worth of work.  Choose the Transfer Studies Certificate, a great way to line up your credits for a smooth transfer.
·
Transfer at Two Years – by completing an Associate of Arts degree (60 credits) or an Associate of Science degree (60 credits).  The majority of transfer scholarships are granted to students who have completed an AA or an AS degree.  Two years in small classes, at a terrific price, finishing general requirements allows you the time to explore majors and find the perfect transfer school.  See any counselor or Departmental Advisor or the Departmental Web Page for assistance in choosing courses and planning for transfer.  Consider General Studies as our most flexible transfer AA degree; or, if you have a specific major in mind, such as Engineering or Business, discuss your degree options with a departmental advisor.

Where you’ll go:

·
Do a College Search for potential schools.  The MC Transfer Page links you to several free on-line search programs, where you can plug in factors like location, major or majors offered, size, and cost.  On-line College Search Programs

· TALK to a counselor at Montgomery College while you consider your options. The best time to visit Counseling is in mid-September through early November.

· Attend an MC TRANSFER INFORMATION DAY on campus to see representatives from over 30 colleges and universities.

· VISIT schools.  Take a tour of the campus, sit in on classes if possible - this is the best way to determine whether the school is a good fit for you.  Find college visit information on the Admissions Page of any school’s website – check for a specific link to Transfer Admissions.  More on College Visits

· Check out MC’s Transfer Information Page—a complete guide to transfer planning for MC students

READY TO APPLY?  TRANSFER TOPICS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Applications  - Most schools prefer online applications over paper forms.  Online, your information can be entered quickly into admissions databases and there's very little chance of a lost application.  Most schools let you track the progress of your online application.

  • Application Deadlines - Most institutions have different deadlines for freshman and transfer students. Check out each specific school for deadline information. While some schools may have December 1 deadline for Spring or a a July 1 deadline for Fall transfer admissions, you may need to apply much earlier to meet financial aid/scholarship/housing (if available) deadlines. The general rule is to apply well in advance of published deadlines for maximum consideration -  mid-October 2007 for Spring 2008, February 2008 for Fall 2008,

  • Writing College Essays:  While it's true that most colleges are more concerned about the content of a transfer student's transcript than they are about the application essay, don't overlook this important chance to let schools know who you are.  The suggestions below apply to essays for all types of program admissions.  Take this task seriously - don't dash it off alone without having someone else review your work.  Check out other important tips on the MC Transfer Page ( www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer  ) :

College Essay Writing Tips from the College Board
Ten Tips for Writing College Essays from ThinkQuest

Letters of Recommendation:  Students often ask faculty members for recommendations for college applications and scholarships. Some applications include blank recommendation forms - others instruct students to ask for a letter of recommendation.  Choose current or recent teachers who know you well enough to say positive things about you.  Help them by providing a list of your current activities and interests.  Use a printable questionnaire from the MC Transfer Page to provide background information to faculty members to make letter-writing more effective. This Word Document also includes a generic recommendation form.  www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/RecForm.doc   Remember to give recommendation writers at least two weeks to complete your form.  If you know that you'll need more than one letter from a professor or counselor, let them know in advance that you'll be coming back for more.  Note:  many schools do NOT require Letters of Recommendation, including UMCP, UMBC, Towson, Frostburg, and Salisbury.  Your MC transcript will tell most schools what they need to know.  Provide letters of recommendation only if your situation is unusual when schools do not require recommendations.
Requesting Copies of Your Montgomery College Transcript:  In general, you'll need two copies of your transcript sent for each college application:   one to be sent along at the same time you send the application form, and a second one sent at the end of the semester showing your final grades.   There's a $5.00 charge per MC transcript sent.  Go to the Office of Admissions to get the form, or print out a request on-line and turn it in:   www.montgomerycollege.edu/admissions/transcripts.html   It's fine to have your first transcript sent separately from your application form.  When transcripts arrive at schools where applications have not been received, schools hold on to transcripts for about 6 months, waiting for the rest of the application to arrive.  So, go ahead and have your transcript sent if you're nearing a deadline and your application isn't quite done.  Note for students applying to Maryland state schools (UMCP, UMBC, UMES, UMUC, Towson, Frostburg, Salisbury) - your transcripts will be sent electronically—this is the method that is PREFERRED by those schools— electronic applications and transcripts make the process faster and more reliable.
If You Don’t Have 30 Credits on Your Transcript When You Apply,
you can expect to be asked to send in your high school transcript and a copy of your SAT scores.  Remember that your grades from courses at MC will be the most important factor in the decision  to admit, so don’t be too nervous if your high school information doesn’t tell the whole story of what kind of student you are now.

Question:  Where do Montgomery College students transfer?
Answer:  Anywhere they want!

While the majority of Montgomery College students transfer to Maryland state public colleges and universities, a significant number of students also transfer to private schools in Maryland and to schools across the nation.  MC’s Office of Institutional Research (OIRA) uses National Student Loan Clearinghouse data to show that students who completed 12 or more credits at Montgomery College in the Fiscal Year 2005 were reported as enrolled at the following four-year schools in FY 2006:

  • 3,080 MC students transferred to 11 Maryland state public four-year institutions

  • 216 MC students transferred to 14 private (independent) four-year institutions in Maryland

  • 1,134 MC students transferred to 338 four-year institutions outside of Maryland (43 states and the District of Columbia)

Every Business Major Needs to Know...

Business is a booming major at the Robert H. Smith School, University of Maryland College Park - both Main and Shady Grove campuses - so much so that early advising is critical to admissions success.

What does it take to get into Smith?  Besides a terrific grade point average (realistically, a 3.5 or higher), each student's application is examined for evidence of leadership activities, work experience and a willingness to take challenging courses.  This is information that incoming freshmen at MC must know.  Involvement in activities should begin early on.  The Smith Advising Page states this clearly.  The student who owns a thriving business and who has a 3.2 may still find a way into Smith, but the majority of students accepted are those who have excelled in the classroom.

Students should also have a Plan B ready.  Many students are attracted to Smith because it's nearby, it's reasonably priced as a state school, and because of its growing reputation.  But Smith is not the only way to succeed in business.

Students often ask, "Will a degree from _______ be as respected/meaningful/marketable as one from Smith?"
The answer is really in several parts:  yes, if  a student has completed an internship or cooperative work experience within the field, yes if a student shows great performance in the classroom, and yes if a student networks with professors and fellow students.  Students with strong internship experience have a distinct edge regardless of where their degree is from or what their major was.  Creative brainstorming with advisors at Montgomery College and at transfer institutions can make a career in business a reality.

Stump the Transfer Advisor!

You have questions about how to transfer from Montgomery College to a four-year school; we have answers.  Ask!
anne.schleicher@montgomerycollege.edu   Here's a recent question:

Dear Transfer Advisor,

I was a decent student in high school, but my SAT's were not great.  I am anxious to transfer to Salisbury University after attending just one year at Montgomery College.  Do I have to send SAT scores with my application?

Signed,
Not a Good Test Taker

Dear NAGTT:

I can understand your concern about your SAT scores; but the good news is, Salisbury will base the decision to admit you on your college performance at MC.  Salisbury wants to see a minimum of 24 transfer credits completed; you can apply for Fall 2008 even if you don't have all 24 credits finished right now.  Assuming that you're taking 12 or more transferable credits this Fall 2007 (college-level, not developmental 00- or 09- courses), you'll still need to take another 12 or more credits in the Spring.  Submit your transfer admissions application in late January/early February to get maximum consideration.  When you apply, since you won't have all 24 credits showing on your record, you'll need to include your high school transcript and SAT scores.  If you've had a good Fall at MC (a 3.0 GPA or higher), then Salisbury will consider you to be a good transfer prospect.  They MAY wait until the end of the Spring 2008 semester to look at your final Spring grades before they give you a definite yes on Admissions.  VISIT Salisbury this Fall (see their website for info on Fast Fridays!); find the Salisbury Admissions Representative at the Transfer Day on your campus, and talk to about your situation.  Before you do that, scour the Salisbury Transfer Admissions webpage for more information.  The website says that applicants with 24 credits completed and a 2.0 will be considered for admission, but we recommend that you aim high for maximum transferability.  Also look for the Recommended Transfer Program Page for your possible Salisbury major(s) on the ARTSYS website.  Visit a counselor at your MC campus to discuss this further.
