Admissions
As MD state schools become more competitive, students increasingly look to MC as an opportunity to make their way to campuses.  Generally, students who earn at least 30 credits and have a 3.0 grade point average will be admitted to most colleges regardless of high school record and SAT scores.  Other factors are important, of course, including courses selected prior to transfer.  That's why we emphasize transfer planning with all incoming freshmen.  Using resources like ARTSYS, the MC Transfer Page and one-on-one advising, transfer students can come up with a game plan for success.

Why Else Do They Come?

Academics

  Small Class Sizes = Attention
from Caring Professors

MC students have an opportunity to adjust to college level work in smaller classes before transferring to a dynamic university setting (where higher level classes are often smaller than first and second year courses).

Transfer Students on Their Way

It sounds a little odd to welcome students to campus and say in the same breath, "Now where can we help you go from here?", but we recognize that students want to work on the big picture.  Whether attending for one semester, one year or two years toward an AA degree, MC students can find expert help along the way to ensure that all courses transfer smoothly.  Here are links to some of our transfer resources:

Spotlight on... UMBC's New B.A. in Management of Aging Services

STARTING IN FALL 2006

Whether you want to help shape national policy, create innovative businesses or make a difference personally, UMBC’s new bachelor’s degree in Management of Aging Services will prepare you for a career in one of the nation's fastest-growing fields.

WHY MANAGEMENT OF AGING SERVICES?

As baby-boomers age, demand is mounting for people to work in businesses, organizations and agencies serving mid-life and older adults in areas as diverse as housing, health, transportation, finance and human resources. These are the careers of the future.

HOW CAN THIS DEGREE HELP ME?

This pre-professional degree will prepare you for entry-level positions in administration or management in:
• Local, state or federal government agencies
• Non-profit organizations and advocacy groups (one of the fastest-growing employer groups)
• For-profit businesses

Job opportunities span a wide spectrum—community planning and development, financial management, housing and heath policy analysis, seniors housing and care administration, hospitality management and more.

WHY UMBC’S PROGRAM?

Employers have told us that they need students with the right mix of skills. No other degree provides the integration of key knowledge and fundamental skills offered by UMBC.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

• Aspects of human aging: Social, psychological, and physical aspects of aging • Foundations of human services: Regulatory/policy/fiscal issues in providing services, legal and ethical aspects of practice, public and private funding sources • Business basics: Accounting, management, human resources and personnel issues, program evaluation • Practice skills: Effective communication, critical thinking/problem-solving/negotiation skills, evaluation and assessment tools and technological applications

The program also includes a supervised internship and case-based capstone project.

A number of schools offer gaming programs. See gamasutra.com/education for a list of schools.

Locally, the University of Baltimore (UB) offers a bachelors degree in gaming. UB has a large number of very generous transfer scholarships for qualified students that pay 50%, 75%, even 100% of your tuition, so be sure to contact UB to check those out!

Montgomery College and UB have a new transfer agreement to ease the transfer process for game degree students. Details will be posted here soon.

The Art Institute also offers game-related programs, and many local Universities offer degrees in Computer Science, Computer Graphics and other related disciplines.

Thinking About Pre-Law, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry,
Pre-Pharmacy Pre-Physical Therapy, or Pre-Vet?

Just what do you say to students who ask about Pre-Law, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physical Therapy, and Pre-Veterinary Science?  Answering questions for Pre- students can be complicated.  No longer are there specific majors in Pre-Law and Pre-Medicine - schools generally allow students to major in whatever they want, getting advising about course selections along the way.  One good place to steer students is into any university's Pre-Law, etc. advising sites.  Even if a student is NOT UMCP-bound, the advising information on their site can be applied to most schools.  Steer pre-anything students into an advising page at schools that interest them, or if they're completely undecided, use UM or UMBC pages for more information.
