New Option for Teacher Certification for college graduates
- From the Washington
Post, Feb. 13, 2003
| In
response to the state teacher shortage, the Maryland Department of
Education announced a program yesterday that will give mid-career
professionals and recent college graduates another way to gain teacher
certification.
Last month, 40 candidates began the Maryland's Alternative Routes to Certification Options program, which allows potential teachers to take online courses through a partnership with University of Maryland University College and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. |
Prince George's County schools will receive the first graduates from the program, who will teach in the county in the summer. If successful, the candidates will be certified for one year to remain in the school system. State Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick said that after the Prince George's introduction, the program will be expanded statewide.

WRITING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STUDENTS
|
Students often ask faculty members for recommendations for college applications and scholarships. Some applications include blank recommendation forms - others instruct students to ask for a letter of recommendation. Give this printable questionnaire to students so you can get more background information to make letter-writing more effective. This Word Document also includes a generic recommendation form. www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/RecForm.doc |
See Writing A Letter of Recommendation from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University for additional information.
You can find this information in the future by looking on the MC Transfer Page - there's a link to Recommendations.

APPLICATION DEADLINES
| Students who want to transfer to another institution for the Fall 2003 semester are advised to work on applications for admissions NOW. The PREFERRED deadline for most schools is March 1 for maximum consideration for admission, housing (if it's available), and financial aid (a FAFSA must be completed as well). |
YES, many schools show a transfer application deadline as late as July 1 - but many schools with rolling admissions may fill before the deadline. The Fall 2003 deadline for Towson University is March 1!

Spotlight on... The University of Maryland, Baltimore - School of Nursing
From the Admissions Office: Admission into the University of Maryland School of Nursing is very competitive as an enormous number of applications are received each semester. The minimum grade point average requirement is a 2.75 in all of the required prerequisite coursework; however for best consideration, students should apply with a 3.0 gpa or higher, particularly in the required science and math coursework. For a list of suggested MC courses and more information, go to www.mc.cc.md.us/Departments/studev/umbnursing.htm

Do "D" Grades Transfer to Maryland Public Schools?
Q: Will grades of "D" be accepted in transfer?
A: "D" grades will be accepted in transfer if the college to which you are applying also accepts a "D" for native students. A "D" grade earned in a general education course that meets a general education requirement at a sending institution, which has designated that course as meeting a general education requirement, will transfer and meet a general education requirement at the receiving institution.

Degree Advising Worksheets
Print out an Excel spreadsheet and help students plan out their path to an MC degree, certificate, or letter of recognition. Web guru & counselor Tom Price, Germantown Campus, has created and placed these easy-to-use forms online to assist advisers and students who are working on MC programs. You can even save the spreadsheet to your desktop (using Internet Explorer), then open it up with Excel, and fill in the courses electronically if you want to send it off as an e-mail attachment. www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studevgt/advisingsheets2.htm
