UMCP English Language Proficiency Pilot for Non-Native Speakers of English
From: UMCP Office of
Admissions
To: Montgomery College Counselors and
Advisers
The University of Maryland, College Park and Shady Grove campuses are piloting
a new procedure for Montgomery College applicants whose native language is not
English. Students may be granted an exception from the TOEFL
requirement/AA degree if their overall GPA is high, if they have taken a
substantial number of academic courses, and if their grade in EN102/109 is an A.
UMCP admission counselors may also be able to make an occasional exception
where the student's overall academic record is very good and the grade in
EN102/109 is a B. This policy will be reviewed every two years
commencing in 2006.
Because of the large volume of
applications at the College Park campus, some students who qualify for this
pilot may still get letters requesting submission of TOEFL or proof of earning
an AA degree. If you see a student who qualifies, please call it to one of
the MC Transfer Council member's attention to be sure these good students
get the special consideration they deserve. Germantown - Anne
Schleicher X1991; Rockville - Joan Hawkins X5075; Takoma Park - Gerry Block X1480.

Does UMBC Offer Business as a
Major?
Not exactly... but the University of
Maryland, Baltimore County does have a series of certificates and
business-related majors. Administrative and Managerial Sciences
certificates can be combined with an Economics major or other majors to
create a business emphasis. Certificates available:
-
Finance
The Finance Certificate is modeled after typical Finance majors at most Schools of Business. The primary difference is that UMBC has fewer elective concentrations within the general area of financial management. UMBC's certificate is geared toward the capital markets/corporate decisions/investment portfolio end of the finance spectrum rather than the banking, insurance, or real estate aspects. International considerations and world markets are incorporated into several of the required courses, and students selecting the optional International Finance course elective gain an additional international financial background.
-
Management Science
The Management Science Certificate emphasizes the theoretical, technical, and applied economic aspects of business administration and management. It stresses decision making using statistical and mathematical tools and surveys most areas of business operations.
-
Personnel & Industrial Psychology
Many students in this program are psychology majors.
-
Preprofessional Studies in Accounting
The Pre-professional Studies in Accounting program is designed to fulfill coursework entry requirements of a graduate program in accounting or taxation. This curriculum and additional courses taken at the master's level will allow the student to sit for the CPA exam in Maryland. Students who choose not to immediately pursue a Master's Degree will have fulfilled the requirements to take exams for the Certified Management Accountant and Certified Financial Management designations.
Business-Related Majors at UMBC:
-
Financial Economics
Bachelor of Science
-
Health Adminstration and Policy
-
Information
Systems Bachelor of Science; Combined
Bachelor of Science/Master of Science
-
NEW
UMBC's
Bachelor of Arts in Business Technology Administration Program
The BA program in Business Technology Administration is designed for students who want a basic education in the use of PC-based office information systems. Another major, a minor, or a certificate program in a field of the student's interest must be completed along with the BA curriculum requirements to qualify for the degree. The BA degree is less technical in nature than the BS program and the focus of the courses is more on the user of office systems.
For successful completion of the degree, all students must satisfy the general education requirements that are explained in the UMBC Undergraduate Catalog.
The required program courses for the Bachelor of Arts Degree are:
