Announcing the New...

  Maryland
Transfer Advantage
Program

Under the new
Maryland Transfer Advantage Program, students are guaranteed transfer admission to the University of Maryland College Park after attending Montgomery College.
Maryland Transfer Advantage students are assured admission to UM upon meeting the following requirements:

Students interested in competitive Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) majors must also meet further requirements of those programs.

   Benefits of Maryland Transfer Advantage

  • Students are admitted to UM based on meeting Maryland Transfer Advantage grade point average and credit requirements, regardless of high school record and SAT scores.  Performance in the college classroom is the proof of academic ability under Maryland Transfer Advantage.
  • UM Advising activities for course selection and majors will be available to Maryland Transfer Advantage students after 15 credits completed at Montgomery College.  Advising will take place both at Montgomery College and on campus at UM.  Advising activities will include open houses, information sessions, town hall meetings and open-advising sessions with information on Maryland programs.  Maryland Transfer Advantage students have a chance to feel connected to UM much earlier in their college experience.
  • Students may take one class per semester or session (fall, winter, spring, summer) at UM at a 25% reduction in tuition after completing 15 credits at MC.  Seats will be on a space-available basis (particularly in some Limited Enrollment Program majors).

Transfer Scholarship Season

It's time for transfer students to start shopping for scholarships!  Deadlines are rolling along for opportunities for next fall.  Two terrific sources of information:  the MC Transfer Scholarship Page and a new publication, The Transfer Scholarship Guide for Maryland Community College Students, produced by the Maryland Community College Financial Aid Directors with support from USAFunds, Inc., and cooperation from the Office of Student Financial Assistance (Maryland Higher Education Commission), and Maryland Association of Community Colleges.  Thanks to MC's Director of Financial Aid, Melissa Gregory, for her part in bringing us this guide!

Winter Term 2006- January Semester Programs Available at Nearby Colleges

MC students sometimes ask about taking courses over the winter break.  Several schools have Winter Terms open to visiting students.  Any Montgomery College student who takes a course at another institution either during a winter term or summer session will need to file a "Permission to Enroll" with the Admissions Office of Montgomery College in advance to insure that the credit from the course will transfer back to MC.  Take a copy of your unofficial transcript with you to register for classes at other institutions to show English and math eligibility.

  • Frederick Community College - Jan Term.  Most classes run from January 2rd - Jan. 14th, meeting Monday through Friday, 3 - 4 hours per day; day and evening classes. Cost per 3-credit course for an out-of-county student, Maryland resident: $610.95.
  • Howard Community College, Columbia, MD - Winter 2006 Schedule  January 3 - Jan. 27.Tuition: $188.00 per credit hour for Maryland residents who are not Howard County residents
  • Carroll Community College Winter 2006 Westminster, MD January 3 - January 28.  Total charges for a 3-credit course, MD resident, out-of-county:  $447.60.
  • University of Maryland, College Park - Winter Term Jan. 3 - 23.  Open to "visiting students" from other institutions - admissions criteria different from those for regular full-time enrollment.  Tuition for MD residents - $273 per credit, plus $65 registration fee and $55 application fee.

Overcoming Transfer Shock

It happens - students who transfer to other colleges and universities may go through a distinct adjustment period.   Here are some articles offering advice on how to minimize the phenomenon of "transfer shock":

The Transfer Times is a nearly monthly publication of Montgomery College
