From Roberta Buckberg, coordinator of Takoma Park/Silver Spring's Transfer Information Day:

"The reasons for attending this event are sometimes misunderstood...students (and faculty and staff) often think that students should attend this event only if they are ready to transfer...nothing could be farther from the truth...this event is for EVERYONE!  So - I bring you the

Top Ten Reasons to Attend Transfer Day!

10. If you haven't selected a major, you may discover a possibility talking to the reps about the HUGE variety of programs at their schools

9. If you are not planning to go on for a bachelor's degree because you need to work right away - you may discover evening, weekend, and/or accelerated programs

8. If you feel you cannot afford to continue school, you can find out about scholarship possibilities - (UMUC and Morgan to name two). Some schools couldn't find enough  folks to give away money to last year!

7. You can find out in advance about deadlines

6. You can talk to a real-live person rather than an admissions office recording (and get their card and keep in touch as you move toward transfer)

5. You can gather information to help you CHOOSE a school that is right for you rather than just sticking with the closest/cheapest option

4. You can find out about visit dates so that you can actually take a tour and see the school first-hand

3. Get information about international student funding and deadlines

2. Find out about cooperative education and internship programs at these institutions that will make you a hot employment prospect upon graduation

and.....

The number one reason for attending Transfer Day....

 1. Collect viewbooks with lovely photographs of attractive students on stunningly beautiful campuses AND get new pens, pencils, and highlighters!

Welcome, Freshman - It's Not Too Early to Start Planning for Your Next Move!

Welcome to Montgomery College— and now it’s time to plan for transferring.  Even if you've just arrived!  Freshmen are encouraged to plan now for transfer.  When  your goal is to graduate from a four-year institution with a bachelor’s degree, it’s important to start thinking about
when and where you’ll transfer.

When you’ll transfer - you have a few options:

 · Transfer after One Year – most students in this category will need to earn 30 credits, or two/three semesters worth of work.  Choose the Transfer Studies Certificate, a great way to line up your credits for a smooth transfer.
·
Transfer at Two Years – by completing an Associate of Arts degree (60 credits).  The majority of transfer scholarships are granted to students who have completed an AA degree.  Two years in small classes, at a terrific price, finishing general requirements allows you the time to explore majors and find the perfect transfer school.  See any counselor for assistance in choosing courses and planning for transfer.  Consider General Studies as our most flexible transfer AA degree.

Where you’ll go:

·
Do a College Search for potential schools.  The MC Transfer Page links you to several free on-line search programs, where you can plug in factors like location, major or majors offered, size, and cost.  On-line College Search Programs

· TALK to a counselor at Montgomery College while you consider your options.

· Attend an MC TRANSFER INFORMATION DAY on campus to see representatives from over 30 colleges and universities.

· VISIT schools.  Take a tour of the campus, sit in on classes if possible - this is the best way to determine whether the school is a good fit for you.  Find college visit information on the Admissions Page of any school’s website – check for a specific link to Transfer Admissions.  More on College Visits

· Check out MC’s Transfer Information Page—a complete guide to transfer planning for MC students

READY TO APPLY?  TRANSFER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Applications  - Most schools offer students the option of using an on-line application in addition to the paper process.  The preferred form these days is on-line - your information can be entered quickly into admissions databases and there's very little chance of a lost application form.   Create a rough draft by printing out a form and filling it in before you sit down to enter the information into an on-line form.

  • Application Deadlines - Most institutions have different deadlines for freshman and transfer students. Check out each specific school for deadline information. While some schools may have a July 1 deadline for Fall transfer admissions or a December 1 deadline for Spring, you may need to apply much earlier to meet financial aid/scholarship/housing (if available) deadlines. The general rule is to apply well in advance of published deadlines for maximum consideration - February for Fall 2007,  mid-October for Spring 2007.

  • Writing College Essays:  While it's true that most colleges are more concerned about the content of a transfer student's transcript than they are about the application essay, don't overlook this important chance to let schools know who you are.  The suggestions below apply to essays for all types of program admissions.  Take this task seriously - don't dash it off alone without having someone else review your work.  Check out other important tips on the MC Transfer Page ( www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer  ) :

College Essay Writing Tips from the College Board
Ten Tips for Writing College Essays from ThinkQuest

Letters of Recommendation:  Students often ask faculty members for recommendations for college applications and scholarships. Some applications include blank recommendation forms - others instruct students to ask for a letter of recommendation.  Choose current or recent teachers who know you well enough to say positive things about you.  Help them by providing a list of your current activities and interests.  Use a printable questionnaire from the MC Transfer Page to provide background information to faculty members to make letter-writing more effective. This Word Document also includes a generic recommendation form.  www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/RecForm.doc   Remember to give recommendation writers at least two weeks to complete your form.  If you know that you'll need more than one letter from a professor or counselor, let them know in advance that you'll be coming back for more.  Note:  many schools do NOT require Letters of Recommendation, including UMCP, UMBC, Towson, Frostburg, and Salisbury.  Your MC transcript will tell most schools what they need to know.  Provide letters of recommendation only if your situation is unusual for schools that do not require recommendations.
Requesting Copies of Your Montgomery College Transcript:  In general, you'll need two copies of your transcript sent for each college application:   one to be sent along at the same time you send the application form, and a second one sent at the end of the semester showing your final grades.   There's a $5.00 charge per MC transcript sent.  Go to the Office of Admissions to get the form, or print out a request on-line and turn it in:   www.montgomerycollege.edu/admissions/transcripts.html   It's fine to have your first transcript sent separately from your application form.  When transcripts arrive at schools where applications have not been received, schools hold on to transcripts for about 6 months, waiting for the rest of the application to arrive.  So, go ahead and have your transcript sent if you're nearing a deadline and your application isn't quite done.  Note for students applying to Maryland state schools (UMCP, UMBC, UMES, UMUC, Towson, Frostburg, Salisbury) - your transcripts will be sent electronically—this is the method that is PREFERRED by those schools—do not feel that you should include a paper transcript with a paper application form.  Electronic applications and transcripts make the process faster and more reliable.
If You Don’t Have 30 Credits on Your Transcript When You Apply,
you can expect to be asked to send in your high school transcript and a copy of your SAT scores.  Remember that your grades from courses at MC will be the most important factor in the decision  to admit, so don’t be too nervous if your high school information doesn’t tell the whole story of what kind of student you are now.

Taking Care of BUSINESS

CHANGES to the Montgomery College Business Degree - the revised AA in Business now shows that students can take MG 201 or any elective.  This change allows students to meet the transfer requirements of different schools in the area.  The elective can be ANY course, and does not need to be business-related.  Here is a description of the new degree in full, which remains essentially the same as the old degree, with the exception of the MG 201 requirement:
Business AA, Effective Fall 2005: www.montgomerycollege.edu/curricula/descriptions/cdbusadmin.htm

Note also that in this new degree, CA 120 is specifically required instead of "CA or CS Elective"

Speaking of Business, DID YOU KNOW... Students who attend the UMCP's Robert H. Smith School of Business @ Shady Grove receive the same diploma as Smith students at the Main Campus - their diplomas read "University of Maryland, College Park" with no mention of the Shady Grove campus.  Even their transcripts come directly from UMCP, also without reference to the Shady Grove campus.   This is important information for students who fear that they will be labeled as "Shady Grove students" rather than graduates of UMCP's Robert H. Smith School of Business.

More
SMITH - Please be aware that the "45-Credit Rule" for students who started at MC expires this Fall 2007.  All students who apply to Smith after Spring 2007 will have to follow the New Smith Requirements.  The GPA required for New Smith students is likely to be very high, a 3.5 or higher (as per information on their web page) - PLEASE caution Smith students to be aware of the need to maintain a high grade point average.  Read more at www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/bus.htm

Stump the Adviser - a "Did You Know Quiz" for Popular Transfer Destinations

Students who would like to transfer for Spring 2007 or Fall 2007 need to be working now to make it happen.  This chart shows typical application deadlines at some sample schools.  In general, students should aim to have applications for most schools finished by mid-October to Nov. 1 for Spring and by March 1 for Fall for maximum consideration for both admission and financial aid.  Applying earlier is a better idea.  When looking at other schools, be sure to note transfer application deadlines rather than freshman deadlines.

Typical deadlines among four-year institutions -

University of
Maryland, College Park
www.umd.edu
This Coming Spring 2007
  • August 1: Deadline for all U.S. citizens & permanent residents with any non-U.S. academic records.
  • November 15: Regular Application Deadline.  Decisions will be released on a rolling basis. Due to space limitations, early application is strongly encouraged.

Fall 2007

  • March 1 preferred for all students; also Deadline for all U.S. citizens & permanent residents with any non-U.S. academic records.
  • June 1: Applicants who complete their application by this date will have decisions released 4-6 weeks after all materials have been received. Complete applications received after June 1st will be reviewed on a space available basis.
    www.uga.umd.edu/admissions/apply/transferdeadline.asp

UMCP prefers an on-line application over the paper form.  Students are urged not to hand-carry transcripts to UMCP - processing will take place faster if the transcript is sent electronically.  MC's Admissions Offices automatically send transcripts to UMCP electronically if students indicate that this is where the transcript should be sent.  UMCP typically waits until March 1 to begin considering applications for Fall 2007; students are notified on a rolling basis after that date.

DID YOU KNOW:  All transfer students will be asked to take a Math Placement test during Orientation, unless they have completed MA 181, Calculus I or higher.  Even students who have completed a college-level math at M.C. (MA 110 through MA 180) will be asked to take this test. UMCP wants math scores for all students in case they want to take additional courses that may have a higher math prerequisite.  Students are often surprised that they have to take this test, but it's required, so prepare for it - the UMCP website has study info - find it also by doing a search on the UMCP website for "Math placement test".  www.math.umd.edu/undergraduate/credit/placement.shtml

Towson
www.towson.edu

Spring 2007 - November 15

Fall 2007 - February 15th    "Priority admission is reserved for transfer students from a Maryland community college who have earned at least 56 transferable credits, are in good academic standing, and have maintained a GPA that meets the policies set by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and University System of Maryland policies.

Students who have earned fewer than 56 transferable credits or who are transferring from an institution other than a Maryland community college will be admitted based upon combined cumulative GPA of transferable credits and space availability."
 wwwnew.towson.edu/discover/applying/transferstudents.html

DID YOU KNOW:  Community college students who take two lab sciences prior to transfer will not need to take a third science at Towson to fulfill General Education Requirements.  Find out more at http://onestop.towson.edu/courses/GenEd/

UMBC
www.umbc.edu
Priority:  March 15
Regular Decision:  May 31  www.umbc.edu/undergrad/a_timeline2.html

Smith School of Business, Univ. of Maryland, College Park
Shady Grove
Campus

www.shadygrove.
umd.edu/

Priority Deadline:  March 1; final deadline, June 31
Students are encouraged to apply earlier - admission to Smith-Shady Grove is offered on a rolling basis.  Students may apply directly to Smith-Shady Grove using this application: www.rhsmith.umd.edu/undergrad/pdfs_docs/ExternalTransApplSG.pdf
or they may apply using the on-line application for UMCP and specify Shady Grove as the campus they would like to attend.  Students are not advised at Smith - Shady Grove on a walk-in basis; plan to attend an Open House to find transfer information; bring an unofficial copy of your transcript for evaluation.  Undecided students can submit one application for both Smith-Main Campus and Smith-Shady Grove.

DID YOU KNOW:  Smith - Shady Grove is a Fall Entrance only program, and it requires full-time, day-time attendance.  Admission to Smith is competitive and varies by the year that you started college.  Total enrollment at Smith - SG:  240 students (120 juniors, 120 seniors).  Check out the Smith Advising pages at:  www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/bus.htm
Smith School of Business,
Main Campus

UM College Park
March 1 preferred; June 1 final deadline
Apply using the regular Application for Admission; indicate Business as a major.  All applicants are admitted first to Letters and Sciences, and then to Smith if they qualify (so there is not a separate application for Smith).  If you are reaching your 45th credit in the Spring, the decision to admit you to Smith will be made after your final grades from Fall 2006 are received (sometime in early January).

DID YOU KNOW:  The 45-Credit Rule applies to all students who started college prior to Summer 2005, and it ends in Fall 2007.  Students who started college Summer 2005 and thereafter fall under the New Smith admission guidelines.  Courses in EL and RD, or AP credits, do not count toward the 45-credit total, but MA 100 does.  See an adviser each semester at MC to plot your admissions strategy!  UMCP Smith - Main Campus population:  2,500 students are Business Majors.
UMUC
www.umuc.edu
Admission is granted on a rolling basis - no specific deadlines.  UMUC advisors are willing to meet with current MC students to evaluate transcripts and make recommendations for continued coursework.  Try to go for advising during non-peak times (February - late March).  Use these on-line guides to see where you stand:  www.umuc.edu/prog/ugp/mjr_worksheets/mjr_worksheets.html

DID YOU KNOW:  UMUC has generous transfer scholarships, offered both in Fall and Spring to community college students who have completed an associate's degree.  Check them out at   www.umuc.edu/financialaid/fa0405/scholarships/04_checklist.shtml

DID YOU KNOW:  AU, like UMCP above, requires that students take a Mathematics Competency test when they transfer, unless you have completed MA 181, Calculus I.  If you have completed another college-level math at the community college (MA 110 through MA 180), this policy still applies to you.  Check here for the specifics.
