Step One:  Meet with a counselor each semester prior to registering for classes

  1. What is the single most important point in Step One?

Step Two:  Begin taking General Education courses in your freshman year

  2. Which Distribution Category in Montgomery College's General Education appeals to you most?  Which one appeals to you least?

Step Three:  Explore majors

  1. List four of the possible ways to explore majors from Step Three.  Put an asterisk (*) by the one or more that seem do-able for you.

  2. Go into one of the links on exploring careers/majors and copy a section that sounds interesting to you - for example, use "What Can I Do with a Major In...? and copy specific information about careers related to one major that may interest you.

  3. You have to find an internship - now!  Which Montgomery College internship program interests you the most, and why?
Step Four:  Search for colleges
  1. Based on what you know now, which are the top four factors that will be most important in choosing your transfer institution?  (If you don't plan to transfer, assume that you must, for the purposes of this unit!)
    1.
    2.
    3.

  2. Choose one of the five college search programs listed on Step Four and do a search for yourself.
    1. Which one did you use?
    2. What criteria, or factors, did you put in?
    3. How many colleges came out on your final list?
Step Five:  Research admission requirements
  1. How do most colleges define a true "transfer student"?

  2. Yes or no - will earning an Associate of Arts (AA) degree help you get into a major with competitive admissions requirements?
Step Six:  Narrow down your choices
  1. When is the best time to make an appointment with an MC Transfer Counselor?
  2. USE the web to "dig deeply into a school's home page, paying particular attention to Transfer Admissions information."  Choose two four-year schools (any two), go to their home pages, and find a reference to transfer admissions requirements for each school.  List which schools you checked out, and copy and paste the information on transfer admissions requirements into this assignment.
Step Seven:  Create a Transfer Plan - choose classes that will transfer smoothly
  1. Which two resources should you use to find specific course requirements for a particular major if you're looking at a Maryland public four-year institution?
  2. Using ARTSYS, pick one of the Maryland public schools and then print out a Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) for a major that interests you.  Write out the following:
    1. the name of the school and the name of the major you printed out
    2. any comments you have about using ARTSYS - was it easy to use?  Could you have figured out how to print out an RTP without instructions?
    3. List any three required courses for the major you chose.  In addition, what MC math course do you need to take for this major?  (It will appear either as a specific math course, like 'MA 116" or it'll say Mathematics Area.  Click on the Area line to see what math courses fulfill the math requirement.
Step Eight:  Complete applications, essays and request letters of recommendations and MC transcripts
  1. What are three important things to remember when requesting letters of recommendations?
  2. Which three tips on writing college essays really seem useful to you?
  3. Bonus Question:  Write out a 500-word college essay titled "My Most Unforgettable College Instructor - My DS Teacher."  Use specific examples, personal anecdotes, and direct quotations... just kidding!
Step Nine: Search for resources to pay for college - scholarships and financial aid
  1. Choose one loan program link and briefly describe the terms for that particular loan - the annual percentage rate and number of years to repay.
  2. Dig through the Montgomery College Transfer Scholarship Page to come up with four possible scholarships for yourself.  List those programs and briefly describe what the award is for and minimum qualifications.
Step Ten:  Making the Transition
  1. What are 3 ways to prevent "transfer shock?"
Review Question

1.  In paragraph form, describe how completing this Steps to Transfer unit has been useful to you.  Consider these points as you write:  Were there any surprises as you looked through the material?  Are you thinking of transferring, and if so, do you have any schools and/or majors in mind?  In your opinion, what was the one most important point of the entire unit?  What steps do you personally feel you need to take right now to make your transfer a success?

Finished!  Send your completed answers to your DS instructor for an evaluation of how you did on this Transfer Unit.
