The Associate of Arts in Teaching - EDUCATION AAT's

The
new AAT's are alive and well on the MC web page - ready for students to use:

Please note the big differences between early childhood, elementary and secondary AAT's.  One size does not fit all!  Check with the specific transfer institution to see what levels students may teach - this can vary from school to school. For example, the Towson University's Elementary Education/Special Education program @ Shady Grove certifies students in Grades 1 - 6 for Elementary Ed and in Grades 1 - 8 for Special Ed.

WHO should follow an AAT? Any student who wants to attend any institution, public or private, in the State of Maryland only. There is no guarantee of transferability for the AAT outside of Maryland - check with individual school catalogs when looking at out-of-state schools for course selections.

Visit MC's Education Majors Advising Page for more information, including scholarships, local schools offering education majors, and career information.

Spotlight on...
The University of Baltimore's B.S. in
CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS

The Corporate Communication program, leading to the B.S. degree, prepares students for positions in government, private industry, and the not-for-profit sector as specialists in the visual and verbal presentation of information. Students enter the program from a variety of backgrounds: from production areas such as photography, video, and graphic design, to English and other liberal arts disciplines. Once in the program, students broaden their information and skills base. Moving from a foundation of communication theory, corporate communication students examine and analyze components of the communication process -- message, content, audiences, and media -- and the learning process -- social learning and modeling, conditioning and reinforcement, etc. They learn the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of communication media, from print and video to satellite teleconferencing, computer graphics, and hypermedia. They graduate with a working knowledge of how to use these media to communicate most effectively and responsibly specific information to specific audiences.

For more information about Corporate Communication, contact the Corporate Communication program director, Professor Julie Simon at 410-837-6061 or visit http://raven.ubalt.edu/programs/bscomm.html.

CLEP Tests - Shortening the Path to a College Degree

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses.  CLEP exams may allow students to...

* Save time. Students may earn college credit for what they already know.  They may have developed knowledge through independent study, advanced high school courses, noncredit adult courses, or professional development.
* Save money. The cost of a CLEP exam is approximately $60.
* Graduate on time. Students earn additional credits needed for graduation through CLEP.
* Satisfy a proficiency requirement.  Students may be able to demonstrate that they've already mastered the content of a basic math or language course.

Click here to see a list of CLEP tests that are acceptable at Montgomery College   Note that even though CLEP tests may be acceptable at MC, it does not always mean that the credits will be accepted at four-year institutions - check with each school to determine CLEP transferability.  UMCP, for example, does not accept CLEP tests in foreign languages; UMUC will not accept a foreign language CLEP test if it is the student's native language.

For CLEP test centers and registration information, visit the CLEP website .  CLEP Individual Subject Study Guides are available as PDF files for purchase ($10.00 per subject) at the CLEP website.

UMUC Announces New Transfer Policies

The University of Maryland, University College (UMUC) has made significant changes to their transfer credit policy to ensure a seamless transition from the associate’s degree to the bachelor’s degree.

  • Community college students with at least 45 credit hours are now eligible for an immediate official evaluation of their transfer credits, even before they graduate with their associate’s degree. Students will know exactly what will transfer and how it will be placed within the UMUC curriculum.

  • Beginning this semester, UMUC will now accept the entire associate’s degree in transfer of up to 70 credit hours when students continue their studies in a related field.  This will better accommodate students whose associate’s degrees require more than 60 credit hours.  Students can complete their associate’s degree knowing that their hard earned degree will fully transfer to UMUC.  We were able to do this without adding to the 120 credit hours required for our bachelor’s degrees.  More information will be shared at the Community College Appreciation Luncheon.

  • Students completing their AA or AS will automatically have their general education requirements fulfilled at UMUC upon transfer provided they continue in their field of study.

UMUC Community College Scholarships are now available for both Fall and Spring semesters.  UMUC is  now accepting spring applications.  More information can be found at www.umuc.edu/ccsp.

UMUC offers two new majors, Finance and Global Business and Public Policy.  Also added: a major in Gerontology as well as three new certificate programs: computer networking, correctional administration, and information assurance.  Additionally, the Criminal Justice Degree is now available entirely online.
