LN 118 ‑ LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT

Course Description: Landscape management skills in site preparation and modification for landscape planting.  Handling of balled and burlapped plant stock and container nursery stock in transplanting process.  Evaluating the soils of planting sites.  Study of fertility practices, drainage problems, use and limitation of soil amendments, methods for selecting, healthy plant material, pruning techniques, mulch materials, chemical and non‑chemical methods of weed control. (3 semester hours)

Course Outcomes  - Students will learn:

ü      To understand the basic morphology and anatomy of a woody plant

ü      To identify the major types of pruning and training for landscape plant material

ü      To understand the of basics soil science

ü      To identify common site problems and know how to correct the problem

ü      To select an appropriate fertilizer analysis and proper amount based on soiling testing results

ü      To identify and correct common nutritional and site problems found in the landscape

ü      To develop a step by step procedure(s) for installing and maintaining plant materials

ü      To identify the types of amendments and mulches

ü      To identify common weeds found in the landscape and options for their control

ü      To calibrate a back pack sprayer

The final lecture exam is cumulative. They will include material from lectures, laboratories and required readings. There will be four quizzes.  Missed quizzes cannot be made up. 

 

EXTRA CREDIT:

You can earn extra credit points for each exam by giving two hours of service in Landscape Technology Demo Gardens/Nursery.

Classroom Policies

MAKEUP TESTS:

Illness:  Arrangements for a makeup of a lecture test must be made within 24 hours of missed exam. A signature of attending physician or nurse is required.  Time for the makeup will be at the mutual convenience of instructor and student.  Tests not taken earn 0 points.

 

Other:  If absence from a scheduled exam is necessary for religious observance or for participation in Montgomery College activities at the request of Montgomery College authorities, notification must be received by the instructor one week prior to the scheduled exam or the right to a makeup is forfeited.

 

Attendance:

Attendance is expected for each of the classes and required field trip(s).

 

Academic honesty:

Students cheating on lecture or lab exams will receive a failing grade for that exam.

 

Classroom conduct:

The use of cell phones during lectures or exams is not allowed.  Use of portable recording devices is not allowed in class unless students receive approval from the professor.
