LN120 LANDSCAPE GRAPHICS
Sample syllabus submitted by Professor Reader, Fall 2005

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the course is to develop in the students the necessary drafting and drawing skills to produce legible and artistic landscape plans. This is accomplished by progressing from simple line drawings in class through small, medium and large scale residential designs.

COURSE OUTCOMES

By the end of the semester, the students will have been exposed to the following:

  • Pencil lettering and shading techniques

  • Use of architectural and engineering scales, triangles, French curves, circle templates

  • Use of correct drawing papers and pencils

  • Three view drawings

  • Simple residential design

  • Complex residential design at ¼”, 1/8” and 10 scale

  • Section drawings

  • Depiction of hardscape materials

  • Drawing of all forms of plant material from groundcover through shrubs and trees

  • Walls, steps, grade changes

  • Correct drawing of tangents and curves

  • Color rendering

GRADING

Students turn in six to eight projects during the semester.  One week projects receive one grade, two week projects two-three grades and the final four week receives six grades.  Grades are given on line quality, work involved, and overall presentation.  Design is taught all semester but no grade is given in design until the last project.  Design depends a great deal on talent and a beginning student should not be penalized.  Projects are not graded on a curve.  Projects turned in late are not penalized.  Quizzes not taken or projects not turned in are given a 0.  If a student turns in all projects by the end of the semester and has reasonably good class attendance, the lowest grade given will be a C.
