LN 190 ‑ PESTICIDE USE & SAFETY

Course Description: This course prepares the horticultural professional for the examination for pesticide application certification.  Course content includes principles of pest control, pesticides, laws and regulations, pesticide labeling, pesticides and human health, personal protective equipment, pesticides and the environment, handling pesticides, pesticide emergencies and pesticide alternatives.

(2 semester hours)

Course Outcomes:

      To describe the principles of pest control.

      To state the major types of pesticides.

      To state a pesticide formulation.

      To describe the benefits and risks of pesticides.

      To enumerate and explain the federal, state, and local laws and regulations as they affect pesticides and their use.

      To identify and understand all parts of the pesticide label including the signal words and symbols.

      To list the four routes by which the human body can be exposed to pesticides and be able to explain how to avoid exposure for each route.

      To discuss the acute, delayed, and allergic effects that pesticides can cause in humans and how to prevent them.

      To recognize signs and symptoms of pesticide poisoning.

      To describe the appropriate first aid for pesticide exposures.

      To state how to properly select, wear, clean and maintain personal protective equipment.

      To recognize heat stress and describe some signs and symptoms.

      To discuss the legal responsibility for following personal protective equipment requirements.

      To describe how to establish and maintain a safe storage site.

      To describe how to avoid pesticide contamination of groundwater and how to avoid harming non-target organisms.

      To understand the effects of environmental factors when using pesticides.

      To describe how to avoid pesticide contamination of groundwater and how to avoid harming non-target organisms.

      To discuss how to protect oneself, others and the environment while handling pesticide tasks including proper disposal of pesticide rinsates and containers, and how to transport pesticides safely.

      To describe how to clean up a pesticide spill.

      To explain the principles of integrated pest management.

The lecture exams are not cumulative.  Lecture exams will include material from lectures (including guest speakers), text and handouts.

 

MAKEUP TESTS:

Illness:  Arrangements for a makeup of a lecture test must be made within 24 hours of missed exam.  A signature of the attending physician or nurse is required.  Time for the makeup will be at the mutual convenience of instructor and student.  Tests not taken earn 0 points.

 

OTHER:

If absence from a scheduled exam is necessary for religious observance or for participation in Montgomery College activity, the instructor must receive notification one week prior to the schedule exam or the right to a makeup is forfeited.

 


 

Classroom Policies

Attendance:

Attendance is expected for each of the classes and required field trip(s).

 

Academic honesty:

Students cheating on lecture or lab exams will receive a failing grade for that exam.

 

Classroom conduct:

The use of cell phones during lectures or exams is not allowed.  Use of portable recording devices is not allowed in class unless students receive approval from the professor.

 

Support services:

Any student who may need an accommodation due to a disability, please make an appointment to see me during my office hour.
