Introduction Personality and interests combine to create work preferences. This week you will examine your Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) inventory results and next week you will examine your Strong Interest Inventory results. As with all inventories, they may tell you things you already know, they make help you to organize the things your know, or they may suggest things you haven't thought about. They are designed to add to what you already know about yourself. When you start seeing the same things repeating on inventory results, you can be pretty certain that this is a pattern you should pay attention to when selecting a career. Here are some questions to ask yourself to get you started. What did you love to do as a child? What do you do that results in you loosing track of time? What programs do you watch on TV? What magazines do you enjoy reading? What activities give you the most energy? What kind of knowledge do you want to use in your career? On the negative side......What are things you have to do that you procrastinate until right before the deadline. What things exhaust you as opposed to energize you? What are things you are doing now that you hope never to have to do again - make sure not to pick a career that is going to require that you do very much if any of these things. Personality and interests are closely connected to career choice because they suggest activities for which we may have a talent (even though they don't measure that talent). If a person has an interest in an activity, she or he is likely to develop the skill to be successful at it. Personality and interests can help us identify the type of career we would enjoy and the kind of environment in which we would like to work. Personality is not only reflected in our interests, but also in our behavior. How do we express our personalities? The way you answered the items on the MBTI may give you some hints as to which work environments would allow you to express these aspects of your personality. These are the topics you will focus your learning on this week. |
