Week #5 Majors/Educational & Transfer Plans

Introduction

So far, the activities and assignments in this course have guided you in the process of developing a career profile.  Hopefully, you are seeing a pattern emerging as you consider careers that fit your interests, skills, values, abilities, personality type and more.  You'll know you are heading toward a satisfying choice if the same careers keep appearing on your Career Profile Data Sheet.  If you are still considering many different careers, now is the time to start thinking what will you do for paid employment and what will you do for fun.

You will complete and submit that form for the last time this week.

The primary task for this week is to investigate possible majors and translate that information into transfer and educational plans.  This is the last week that you will spend collecting information about yourself.  Next week you will start examining the world of work.

For this module, you will need to make a preliminary selection of a college major and a transfer school (if you eventually want a BA/BS) in order to complete your Educational Plan.  Don't worry if you are still feeling undecided.  You can always change these decisions later.  The purpose of the preliminary selection is for you to learn the process of developing Educational and Transfer Plans.  Some students change majors when they find out what is required to complete a certain course of study.  That's what this week is all about - finding out the requirements of certain college majors.

Objectives

Students will:

  • Understand how majors are organized
  • Make a preliminary selection of a college major

Develop an Educational Plan with your transfer school in mind!

1. You have made a preliminary selection of a college major (Discussion Board assignment)

2. You have made a preliminary selection of a transfer school and found courses that you need to add to your MC degree.

3. For the sake of this assignment, go to the MC programs of study website and select the most appropriate AA, AS, AAT, or AFA degree.  If your major isn't listed, use the General Studies Degree. Make a copy of that curriculum.

4. Go to the Online Student Success Center go to the bottom where you see the Educational Planning Workshop.  Make a copy (use "save as" to copy it to your computer and then make a hard copy of the Course Planning Form

5. Play the entire Workshop from this link Educational Planning Workshop or play each section separately.

6. Fill out the Course Planning form based on what you learned from the Educational Planning workshop, what the MC curriculum requires, and what your transfer school requires.  To find out what courses you have already taken, sign into your MyMC and select the Degree Evaluation link under Quick Links.

Make sure to submit your work to the Assignment Drop.  It is also a good idea to have a counselor review your work.  I will do this as feedback on the assignment, but you also might want to see someone in person for help with this assignment.  Ask questions about this assignment on the discussion board.  It's pretty detailed.
