Introduction How often have you wondered what you will be when you grow up? This question is certainly too big to answer in the few weeks we have together. The good news is that you have the rest of your life to answer this question. It doesn't get answered just once. Your first decision will be to select a college major. Then, throughout your time in college, you might give some thought to your first job after college. Please, please don't worry about the rest of your life. None of us has a crystal ball that works well enough to look that far into the future. Enjoy the process. It's a lifelong journey that is all about getting to know yourself. |

Lecture MaterialsCareer exploration has three major components. One is to learn about yourself, another is to learn about the world of work, and a third is to identify careers that are a good fit for your interests, abilities, values, and personality type. Once you've identified possible careers, you must develop an action plan to achieve the short term goals necessary to make the long term goal a reality. It is important to remember that this doesn't happen just once. For the rest of your career, you will reassess your initial decisions and perhaps change jobs and careers based on new self knowledge and experience. One of my favorite quotes is from Barbara Shur, a career counselor. She says, "find a career that you love and you'll never have to work for another day in your life." It's so true. There are many online career assessment websites that may help you identify your career interests, personality type, values, skills, abilities and much more. The career planning mega list of resources listed below has many for you to explore - not now - later. First.... You must have free Java software downloaded on your computer to open the presentation. Then go to one or two College Major websites from the Career Planning Mega Resource List to begin deciding which college major you will select. Don't worry if you have no intention of attending these schools - they just do a really good job of describing majors. UNCW and Indiana are particularly good websites. Some careers such as nursing, teaching, and engineering require specific college majors. For other careers such as many in business, there are a variety of majors that will prepare you for entry. Look for a major that is interesting to you. You will take many courses in your major,
so make sure you enjoy learning the subject.
To learn more about this topic consider taking DS 103 - I will be teaching an online section during the last half of fall semester. I would love to have you in the course. |
