College Life Module


Introduction 

Not all education happens inside the classroom. Much of what it means to be a college student happens when you meet people and participate in activities outside the classroom. What experiences do you want to have in college that will help you in your future life? Sometimes students decide to join clubs or organizations to find friends with similar interests or to enhance their 4 year college application as well as their future résumé. Some would say that learning is all about developing relationships.  Decisions about relationships and about how to spend your time outside of the classroom is the focus of this module.

Involvement can mean student-faculty interaction (recommendations) which may lead to success after Montgomery College.  Finding a mentor might be one of the most important things you might do while you are here - make it a priority - it could be a teacher, advisor, counselor, staff or administrator.  Look for someone to connect with and make an effort to get to know them.

Step 1 Complete the reading from the Related Outside Web Sites.  Read an article and post a summary on the discussion board for the class.  Make sure to include a question for the class.

Step 2 While your on the discussion board, answer the diversity question.

Step 3 Read the Essential Website Resources for Success page. 

Step 4 Complete the Website Scavenger Hunt and submit it to the Assignment Drop.

Step 5 Respond to the diversity DQ posted by others.

Diversity Article Discussion - Read one article from this page: http://www.edchange.org/multicultural/sites/essays.html or from the Diversity Internet Resources page listed above.  Summarize it for the class.  Post this summary directly into a reply message to the Article topic on the Discussion Board.  End your summary with one question for the class about the topic covered in your article.  Make sure to include the title of your article and the URL/Internet Address so we can get there to read it.  Read the articles of other students.

Describe an incident of discrimination or harassment that you experienced or witnessed. The discrimination may have been based on race, ethnic group, religion, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability or age. How did the experience affect you and the other people involved? Describe your feelings, values, beliefs and actions during and after the incident. What actions might you take to prevent this type of incident from happening again? Respond to the experiences of two other students.

Resources - College websites are rapidly becoming one of the best sources of information for college students.  Montgomery college has a student portal, MyMC which is password protected and has a lot of personal information.  The public site is the college's homepage at http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/  In this Assignment, the Website Scavenger Hunt, you are to visit various sites to learn a little information.  Copy the Website Scavenger Hunt worksheet, answer the questions, and submit the assignment to the Assignment Drop. 

You will submit this assignment to the Assignment Drop.  Here is how to do it:

  • Go to the Table of Contents for this Module
  • Open the Website Scavenger Hunt by selecting the link above
  • Use your Right Mouse button to right click on the document and Select All
  • Go to Edit on your Menu Bar and select Copy
  • Open a new Word Document, go to Edit, Paste
  • Complete the Assignment
  • Save as yourlastnamehunt
  • Go back to course website
  • Select Assignment Drop
  • Select Learning Styles Reflection Paper
  • Select Upload File
  • Select the Browse button to find the yourlastnamehunt document
  • Select upload
  • Select Submit assignment button
  • Say ok to the Confirmation box
  • Don't forget to read the feedback on your returned assignment

The naming convention for this paper is yourlastnamehunt. For example, John Smith's paper would be smithhunt.
