Copy and paste the steps & questions below into a word processing document.  Answer each question in sentence form.  All of the answers and activities are found in the Steps listed with the question.  You'll become an expert in Transfer along the way!

Transfer Unit Questions

Step 1 Most Important

  1. What is the single most important point in Step One? (1 point)

Step 2 General Education       

  1.  What are "General Education courses" and why do all colleges ask that students take them?  (Your answer can be a brief summary of the information from Step Two. (2 points)

  2. Which Distribution Category in Montgomery College's General Education appeals to you most?  Which one appeals to you least? (1 point)

Step 3 Explore Majors

  1. List four of the possible ways to explore majors from Step Three.  Put an asterisk (*) by the one or more that seem do-able for you.  (2 points)
     
  2. Go into one of the links on exploring careers/majors and copy a section that sounds interesting to you - for example, use "What Can I Do with a Major In...? Copy specific information about careers related to one major that may interest you.  (2 points)
     
  3. You have to find an internship - now!  Which Montgomery College internship program interests you the most, and why? (2 points)

Step 4 Search for Colleges

  1. Based on what you know now, which are the top four factors that will be most important in choosing your transfer institution?  (If you don't plan to transfer, assume that you must, for the purposes of this unit!) (2 points)

Step 5  Research Admissions Requirements

  1. How do most colleges define a true "transfer student"? (1 point)

  2. Yes or no - will earning an Associate of Arts (AA) degree help you get into a major with competitive admissions requirements? (1 point)

Step 6 Narrow Down Your List

  1. When is the best time to make an appointment with an MC Transfer Counselor? (1 point)
  2. USE the web to "dig deeply into one school's home page, paying particular attention to Transfer Admissions information."  Two four-year schools (any two), go to their home pages, and find a reference to transfer admissions requirements for each school.  List which schools you checked out, and copy and paste the information on transfer admissions requirements into this assignment.  Hint - Google has a search engine for college web pages at: http://www.google.com/options/universities.html (4 points)

Step 7 Create a Transfer Plan - Choose courses that will transfer smoothly.

  1. Which two resources should you use to find specific course requirements for a particular major if you're looking at a Maryland public four-year institution? (2 points)
  2. Using ARTSYS, pick one of the Maryland public schools and then print out a Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) for a major that interests you. Write out the following: (3 points)
    1. the name of the school and the name of the major you printed out
    2. any comments you have about using ARTSYS - was it easy to use? Could you have figured out how to print out an RTP without instructions?
    3. List any three required courses for the major you chose.  In addition, what MC math course do you need to take for this major?  (It will appear either as a specific math course, like 'MA 116" or it'll say Mathematics Area. Click on the Area line to see what math courses fulfill the math requirement.

Step 8  Apply for admission:  applications, essays, letters of recommendations and MC transcripts

  1. What are three important things to remember when requesting letters of recommendations? (3 points)
  2. Which four tips on writing college essays really seem useful to you? (2 points)
  3. Bonus Question:  Write out a 500-word college essay titled "My Most Unforgettable College Instructor - My DS 107 Teacher." Use specific examples, personal anecdotes, and direct quotations... just kidding!

Step 9 Search for resources to pay for college - scholarships and financial aid

  1. Choose one loan program link and briefly describe the terms for that particular loan - the annual percentage rate and number of years to repay. (2 points)
  2. Dig through the Montgomery College Transfer Scholarship Page to come up with two possible scholarships for yourself. List those programs and briefly describe what the award is for and minimum qualifications. (2 points)

Review Question

1.  In paragraph form, describe how completing this Steps to Transfer unit has been useful to you. Consider these points as you write: Were there any surprises as you looked through the material?  Are you thinking of transferring, and if so, do you have any schools and/or majors in mind? What was the one most important point of the entire unit?  What steps do you personally feel you need to take right now to make your transfer a success? (5 points)
