Now That I Know How To Get There, How Do I Get Back to Those Wonderful Internet Sites?

Internet Explorer has a function that allows you to keep a list of Internet sites that you have visited and want to return to.  You donít have to remember the Internet address. This function lets you organize websites into meaningful categories. This function is called Favorites.  It is a feature on the Internet Explorer Menu Bar.  This function makes surfing the Internet much more enjoyable. 

In a previous lesson, you located the Menu Bar.  We will now learn to use one of the Menu Bar tools called Favorites. 

In this lesson, you will learn to create and name folders in Favorites, save websites in folders, move websites, delete and rename websites.  

To begin this lesson, your desktop should look something like this:

 

If you do not have a column to the left of the Content area headed by the word Favorites with the words Add and Organize underneath, select View from the Menu Bar, drag the cursor to Explorer Bar, then drag to Favorites and release.

Practice:

In this step, you will learn to save three websites in Favorites.

Activity

1. Go to one of your favorite places on the Internet.

2. The site should appear in the Content Area.

3. Choose Add from the Favorites area to the left of the Content Area.

4. Select OK.

5. Repeat these steps two more times.  

6. You should have 3 Internet sites saved in Favorites.

7. Compare your Favorites area to the example above.

In this step, you will create two folders.

Activity

1. Select Organize from the Favorites area to the left of the Content Area.

2. Select Create Folder twice.

3. Select Close.

4. Compare your Favorites area to the example above.

In this step you will name folders using meaningful categories.

Activity

1. Put your cursor under the top folder until an underline appears.

2. Click the right mouse button.

3. Pull the cursor down to the Rename command and click the left mouse button.

4. Drag the cursor to the highlighted box and click.

5. Type the name that youíve chosen for the folder.

6. Hit the enter button on your keyboard.

7. Repeat these steps for the other folder.

8. Compare your Favorites area to the example above.

In this step you will move each of your websites into the folders.

Activity

1. Move your cursor until one of the websites is underlined.

2. Click your left mouse button.

3. Keep the left mouse button depressed and drag the website.

4. Drop it into one of the folders by releasing the left mouse.

5. Repeat these steps until all three websites are in one of the folders.

6. Open each folder by clicking on it to make sure you still have three websites on your list of Favorites.

7. Compare your Favorites area to the example above.

In this step you will move a website from one folder to another.

Activity

1. Open one of your folders.

2. Move your cursor to one of the websites.

3. Click the left mouse button.

4. Keeping the button depressed, drag the site to the other folder.

5. Check both folders to make sure you still have three websites and that the one you intended to move actually did move.

There is no example for this step.

In this step you will delete one of your websites.

Activity

1. Open one folder.

2. Move the cursor so one of the websites is underlined.

3. Right click the mouse button.

4. Select delete.

5. Select yes.

6. You should now have two folders and two websites.

In This step you will save your list of favorites as a file on your computer.

Activity

1. Go to File and select Import and Export.

2. Select the Next Button.

3. Select Export Favorites.

4. Select Next two more times.

5. Select the Browse Button to decide where you want to locate the files.  Remember where you have put this file.

6. Select Next.

7. Select Finish.  Select Ok.

8. Go to your newly created file and open it.

This is a great way to create a backup of your Favorites list and also to use them for multiple purposes.  Sometimes people will ask for recommendations of good websites.  This is a handy way to share your collection.
