Dr. Amy A. Gumaer currently serves as Acting Instructional Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring (TP/SS) Campus, where she oversees the departments of Visual Arts and Design; Communication and Performing Arts; English, Reading, World Languages, and the American English Language Program; and Social Sciences. Dr. Gumaer has served as Associate Dean for the division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences since 2005. As Associate Dean at MC, she served as Chair of the TP/SS Gallery Committee, as Chair of the division’s Student Success Committee on Retention, as a member of the Honors Steering Committee, and as a member of the Planning Committee for the Institute for Global and Cultural Studies (IGCS) at Wheaton High School. Prior to coming to MC, Dr. Gumaer was Director of the International Language Lab, Director of International Education, and Associate Professor at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. During her career at Hudson Valley, she contributed to a successful $1.8 million Title III Strengthening Institutions Program grant; served as faculty advisor of the Foreign Language & Culture Club; taught German and English as a Second Language; and was a member of the Cross-National Project Steering Committee, a statewide project led by the NYS System Office of International Programs and the SUNY Learning Network.
Dr. Gumaer has a B.A. in German (cum laude) from the University of New Hampshire, and an M.A. in Education from the University at Albany, State University of New York. She received a New York State/Empire State Challenger Fellowship to support her Master’s degree studies, and a SUNY graduate fellowship to spend one year at the University of Würzburg in Germany. She also spent her Junior Year Abroad in Germany at the University of Bonn. She completed a Doctor of Arts degree in Humanistic Studies in an interdisciplinary degree program combining coursework in the Humanities, German, and Art History from the University at Albany/SUNY, and was awarded the University’s Distinguished Dissertation Award by the College of Arts and Sciences for her doctoral dissertation.
