Dr. Dehlly Porras currently serves as Instructional Dean
at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring
Campus. She oversees the departments of Biology,
Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Business,
Management, and Information Sciences (BMIS). Prior to moving to Maryland in 2003, she
lived in New York where she served as Dean of Liberal
Arts, Sciences, and Health Sciences at Hudson Valley
Community College - State University of New York in
Troy. Prior to that she served as professor of
mathematics for 22 years at LaGuardia Community college
in Long Island, New York. During her tenure there,
she held several administrative positions including
serving as the Director of International Programs for 8
years.
Dr. Porras has presented at numerous
academic conferences and conventions and her work has
appeared in professional publications. Her
research interest is in teaching and learning, focusing
on the creation of teaching methods and materials for
students with a pattern of academic failure. She
co-authored an algebra textbook that incorporates
reading, writing, and critical thinking learning
activities into mathematics content.
Dr. Porras has a solid trajectory
of service to the community where she works and lives.
She has served as board member to community and private
organizations. Presently, she is a member of the
Latin American Committee on mathematics Education, the
American Association of University women, the Latino
Health Alliance Education Support Group in Silver
Spring, Maryland, and Maryland's Governor Higher
Education Commission Transition Working Group.
Her formal education comprises a Doctorate in
Mathematics Education from Columbia University in New
York, a Master of Arts in pure mathematics from the
College of New Jersey, and a Bachelors of Science in
mathematics and statistics from Universidad Nacional de
Colombia in
Bogotá.
Dr. Porras has also participated in higher education
leadership programs at Rutgers University in New Jersey,
Maricopa Community College in Arizona, Morgan State
University in Maryland, and at the Association of
Community College Trustees in Washington, DC.
