The Student Services Center
is located adjacent to the pedestrian bridge crossing over the CSX/metro
tracks. For the first time, enrolling students have convenient access in one building
to Admissions and Records, Assessment and Testing, Career and Educational Planning,
Financial Aid, the Cashier. It is also home to key
administrative offices, the Office of the Vice President and Provost, the Office of the Dean of Student Development and
the Office of Student Life. Also located in this 95,000 square foot facility
are
Security offices, the mailroom, the cafeteria, student and faculty/staff lounges,
conference rooms, MC Copies, and important Student Activities areas for clubs, the radio
station, the newspaper, volunteers, and the Service Learning Program.
In addition, the Student Services Center offers the first ever
on-site computer and Internet lab at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. Computer labs for
students to work on out-of-class assignments and web research are
particularly critical for this campus where only one in five students has
access to a home computer. This lab offers students increased opportunities and availability to current
technology and software.
During phase I, the college built a new
pedestrian bridge. The bridge over the CSX/Metro tracks is a crucial element in the Campus
expansion. It provides the necessary connection between the existing campus and the
new buildings, west of the tracks.
The bridge begins at
the northeast corner of Jessup Blair Park, and then crosses the CSX/WMATA
railroad track right-of-way. A ramp and stairway connected to Fenton Street
as part of the first phase of the bridge construction. At the east side of
Fenton Street, the bridge terminates inside the Student Services
Center at the second floor level. The construction of this eastern
connection comprised the second phase of the bridge construction and
coincided with the construction of Student Services Center.
