Service Learning Update

The Office of Volunteerism and Service Learning has continued its relentless efforts in keeping our students, faculty, and staff engaged in promoting positive relationships and making a difference in the lives of those whom they serve.

Keyanna Bryant, a Montgomery College student participated in the student service learning experience to fulfill a class requirement but later classified it as one of the best things she's participated in for a long time.  Being that she's had prior work experience with children, Keyanna requested an activity that would promote her interaction with them.  She exercised her volunteer efforts at Piney Branch Middle School tutoring students from grades 3 to 6 in Math and English.  According to Keyanna, she looked forward to each opportunity during the week and greatly enjoyed this activity. She thanked Lucy Vitaliti, our campus service learning coordinator for suggesting this particular activity that presented her the opportunity to get involved and make a difference in not only the community but also in one's life.  Keyanna has learned that one of the rewards of volunteering is that "what you did may have helped to make a difference in not only an individual's life but also in the community".

Cody Nunley started his quest for higher education at Montgomery College and wanted to get involved working with children.  He aspires to become an elementary school teacher.  Majoring in elementary education, Cody wants to teach youth because he believes this is their most impressionable period in life.  According to Cody,  "If you teach them now while making it fun to learn, then they are more apt to succeed later on."  All the children he works with absolutely adore his interactive method of teaching.  Cody rewards them for their work by telling them what a great job they're doing. Cody's experience involved an opportunity to teach a child with a learning disability.  The child found it difficult focusing on one thing, and his mind often wandered to his surroundings.  Cody has taught this child how to count by twos, threes, fours, fives, and tens. Well, not exactly count by, but he has grasped the idea of how to find these numbers on a number chart, which is a giant leap for his learning how to count.  Another opportunity Cody embraced was working with a fifth grade student on homework assignments, specifically in Math.  Cody has worked on the computer with her in this area.

"These children are so bright 'in their own way' and I enjoy making the light shine for all to see.
The feeling you get by helping others is so awesome, kind of like being on cloud nine, a moment of ecstasy"  - Cody Nunley -
