DOS AND DON’TS
OF BEING A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT
SET YOUSELF UP
FOR SUCCESS
- DO schedule
weekly your time for reading, writing, and studying for each class. Think
of your planned time as a routine- a “must.” (Most Successful students in
a 3-credit class will plan 6 hours outside of class.)
DON’T wait to setup your
schedule. Time management is necessary for success.
- DO understand
clearly how you will get your grade. Know how many tests and papers are
required and any other methods of grading.
MANAGER YOUR
TIME IN CLASS
- DO come
to every class.
DON”T miss class without
contacting the teacher and a classmate about the work you missed. Get phone
numbers soon.
- DO
take notes in every class. Even brief summary of class discussion helps
you to
become successful. Class notes are
your personal records of class time. Write in
any format. Class notes are not always in
outline form.
DON’T trust your memory or
your textbook to give you all of what you need for success.
- DO
use class lectures, discussions, and written work to anticipate
test questions and successful completion of written assignments.
DON’T study for tests or
write a paper with class notes unopened. Class notes are usually the best
source of test questions and successful written assignments.
- DO
control your class listening behaviors. Sit near the front and away from
distractions. Practice listening for possible exam questions and clues for
successful written assignments. ASK QUESTIONS and look interested.
DON’T let boredom ruin
success.
