General Advising Comments:  There is one path for transfer admission to the Robert H. Smith School of Business, Main Campus and Shady Grove. The Old 45-credit policy NO LONGER APPLIES.  Go over admissions information carefully with an adviser EACH SEMESTER before you register for classes.

This major will be highly competitive for students under the NEW Smith advising requirements, based heavily on overall grade point average.  Other factors in the 60 credit review will include an examination of transcripts to see whether students have taken challenging courses and have been involved in extracurricular activities.  Participation in MC's Macklin Business Institute could provide students with high GPA's an advantage in admission to New Smith.

Students following NEW Smith requirements (60 credits) may complete an AA in Business or an AA in General Studies prior to transfer.  Discuss with adviser.
The Spring 2006 revision of the Business AA no longer requires MG 201, Business Law.

Did You Know?  Students who attend Shady Grove receive the same diploma as students who go to the Main Campus - it reads "Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park" with no reference to Shady Grove.  Four majors only are offered at Shady Grove -
Accounting, General Business, International Business, and Marketing.

The Lower Level Requirements for Business Majors Are the Same for All Majors EXCEPT - Information Systems requires completion of MA 181 & 182, Calculus I & II.  All other Business Majors take MA 160 Elementary Applied Calculus as the Fundamental Math course.  Note that new students will take MA 103 as the prerequisite for MA 160; Information Systems students will take MA 103 Intermediate Algebra, MA 105 Trigonometry, and MA 180 Precalculus prior to taking MA 181 Calculus I.  MA 103 and MA 105 can be taken in the same semester; also MA 105 and MA 180 can be taken in the same semester.

Requirements for Admission to Business are the Same for Internal or External Transfer Admits:

  • Internal transfers are students already at the University of Maryland trying to change majors to a LEP.

  • External transfers (community college students) are students applying to the University of Maryland who would like to major in an LEP.

  • The admissions requirements for LEP's for Internal and External Transfers are the same.

  • External transfer students (community college students and those from other schools) apply to LEP's by submitting only the General Transfer Application for Admission to the University of Maryland by indicating the major(s) of interest - there is not a separate LEP application form.
