Have a question that isn’t listed here? Email FERPA@montgomerycollege.edu Q: Why can’t I get my son/daughter’s final grades or a copy of his/her class schedule? I’m paying the bill! A: When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a postsecondary institution regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer to the student, regardless of who is paying the tuition bill. FERPA is a federal law that limits access to student education records, including grades and class schedules. This means that Montgomery College cannot tell you when and where a student’s class is being held or if a student is present. Your best bet is to maintain open communication with your son/daughter about their academic progress at Montgomery College. Q: How can I pay my son/daughter’s account if you can’t even tell me how much he/she still owes? A: Have your son or daughter log-on to MyMC. MyMC provides students access to registration, their account balance, and allows students to sign up for a payment plan. MyMC also provides students with access to their earned grades and current class schedule. Q: Can I have a log-in to my son/daughter’s MyMC account? A: Montgomery College does not currently allow third party access to MyMC. Montgomery College students are advised not to share their log-in information with anyone, as all students are held fiscally and legally responsible for actions taken through MyMC. Q: Can you send me a letter certifying that my child is enrolled as a full-time student at MC? A: Often parents need letters of certification about their son/daughter’s enrollment to provide an employer for tuition benefits or insurance companies to continue coverage and/or receive a discounted rate. The Office of Admissions and Records processes these requests on a daily basis. Students should drop off the appropriate form to the Office of Admissions and Records for processing. If an Enrollment Verification letter is required, students must bring a completed Enrollment Verification form to the Campus Cashier and pay the $5 fee. Q: How can my son/daughter provide me access to his/her Student Record? A: The Office of Admissions & Records has the Permission to Release/Withhold Education Record Information form. Students may complete this form at the Office of Admissions & Records. The form allows students to designate parents who may have full access to their student records. Should a parent wish to take advantage of this, they must come in person to the Office of Admissions & Records and present a picture ID and their most recent Federal Tax Return verifying that the student is a legal, tax dependent. Please note: Parental access to a student’s record does not include current academic progress. This means that while parents may be provided access to grades earned, Montgomery College will not provide progress reports to parents for the current semester. Your best bet is to maintain open communication with your son/ daughter about their academic progress at Montgomery College. Q: Can my son/daughter permanently block my access to his/her Student Record? A: Yes, any student at Montgomery College may submit
the Permission to Release/Withhold Education Record Information form.
This form provides students the legal right to request directory information
be withheld from all individuals, including parents. To that end, it
is best to maintain open communication with your son or daughter about
their academic progress at Montgomery College. |
