Have a question that isn’t listed here? Email FERPA@montgomerycollege.edu Q: Why can’t my parents take care of registration and everything else for me? They are paying the bill! A: When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a postsecondary institution regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer to the student, regardless of who is paying the tuition bill. FERPA is a federal law that limits access to student education records, including grades and class schedules. Now that you’re at College, you are required to take care of registration, etc. on your own; we recommend that you also maintain open communication with your parents about your Montgomery College experience. Q: I’ve forgotten my MyMC log-in information; can you tell me what it is? A: For help logging-in to MyMC, consult the MyMC log-in screen. If you need additional assistance, you may contact the Information Technology Help Desk at (240) 567-5000, option 2. Q: I’m traveling and don’t have access to a computer. Can you tell me what my final grades are? There are two ways to find out your final grades. You may look them up through MyMC, or you may request a transcript. Grades are never disclosed over the phone. Q: Can my parents access MyMC to pay my bill? A: Montgomery College does not currently allow third party access to MyMC. Montgomery College students are advised not to share their log-in information with anyone, as all students are held fiscally and legally responsible for actions taken through MyMC. You could log-on to MyMC with your parents, since they may wish to view your current account balance and sign up for a payment plan. Your parents may also wish to have a copy of your grades and current class schedule, which you can print from MyMC. Q: What if I really want to give my parents access to view my student record? A: The Office of Admissions & Records has the Permission to Release/Withhold Education Record Information form. Students may complete this form at the Office of Admissions & Records. The form allows students to designate parents that may be given full access to their student records. Once a student submits this form, his or her parents must come in person to the Office of Admissions & Records and present a picture ID. Please note: Parental access to a student’s record does not include current academic progress. This means that while parents may be provided access to final, earned grades, Montgomery College will not provide progress reports to parents for the current semester. Your parents should not contact your professors on your behalf. Q: I have a personal safety/security situation that requires me to limit access to my student record. What are my options? A: Any student at Montgomery College may submit the Permission to Release/Withhold Education Record Information form. This form provides students the legal right to request Montgomery College withhold directory information. All non-directory information is already protected unless signed, student consent is provided. It’s important to understand that this option will greatly limit the accessibility of your records, which can often prove burdensome. Likewise, this is an “all or nothing” option. All information will be withheld from all requestors unless the request is a clear FERPA exception; Montgomery College may honor a student’s request not to disclose non-directory information, but FERPA does not require MC do this. You may not request non-disclosure to a particular person or group of persons. The “Confidential” hold remains in effect until the student directs the Office of Admissions and Records, in writing, to remove it. This is even true after the student has ceased attending MC. The student has the right to request non-disclosure only while in attendance. Student who have left MC do not have the right of non-disclosure. Q: Can my parents request a letter certifying that I am enrolled as a full-time student at MC? A: Often parents need letters of certification about their son/daughter’s enrollment to provide an employer for tuition benefits or insurance companies to continue coverage and/or receive a discounted rate. The Office of Admissions and Records processes these requests on a daily basis. If the employer, insurance company, etc. provides
a form to be filled out, the student should drop off the appropriate
form to the Office of Admissions and Records for processing. If an Enrollment
Verification letter is required, the student should bring a completed
Enrollment
Verification form to the Campus Cashier and pay the $5 fee.
