Assessment tests are required unless you are exempt. Test results are used to determine placement in reading, English, and mathematics and to assure that these basic skills are adequate for other College level courses. Montgomery College offers assessment tests at no charge, but also accepts the results of standardized tests including the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL. *Minimum scores are required for each exemption. Assessment testing is waived in the following cases: Prior US degree - New
MC students who have a prior degree from an accredited US college or
university are not required to test; however, all students taking courses
with a math component are encouraged to take the Accuplacer math test
if you have been away from math classes for three years or longer. Personal interest students - Adult students (out of high school for at least three years) who speak English as their first language may enroll in up to 11 credits of courses other than math or English prior to assessment testing - if officially classified as a “personal interest” student. Visiting/transit students - Students from other colleges and universities may fax a permission to enroll form or letter signed by your academic advisor to the Admissions Office of the campus where the class will be held. The recommendation of your advisor will be accepted as documentation that you meet assessment levels or prerequisites for specific Montgomery College courses. The approval must list the exact MC courses. A word of caution for students exempt from tests or prerequisite checks: All students are expected to begin each class with the skill levels indicated in the course description. Instructors may drop any unprepared student. If you are in doubt, take a test or consult an advisor before enrolling. *Minimum scores on standardized tests For exemption from MC English assessment
