Beacon History
Beacon Beginnings
The Beacon Conference was established in 1993 when Rockland Community
College (NY) created the concept of an annual scholarly conference to
showcase the research of students at two-year colleges. With a grant
form the American Association of Community Colleges and the Kellogg
Foundation and in association with Bergen Community College (NJ), Brookdale
Community College (NJ), Catonsville Community College (MD), Dutchess
Community College (NY), Harford Community College (MD), Kingsborough
Community College (NY), Middlesex Community/Technical College (CT),
Nassau Community College (NY), and Westchester Community College (NY),
they organized and hosted two conferences (1993 and 1994) for regional
student scholars. Since then, Beacon has grown; institutional membership
and student participation now extends to two-year colleges in the Mid-Atlantic
region.
Montgomery College's Beacon History
Montgomery College has been an institutional member of the Beacon coalition
of two-year colleges since 1998 and each year sponsors our competing
students. Our students have been active participants and recipients
of Beacon Outstanding Presenter awards in the Beacon Conference for
several years. If you are interested in participating in Beacon 2005
and would like to submit a paper, please contact the Beacon representatives
on your campus. Click here for
