***URGENT CALL FOR DONATIONS***
Recent reductions in state
aid to Montgomery College, for both the current and next year, total
$2.4 million. That’s on top of the $2 million the
College lost in expected aid last year. Meanwhile, Montgomery
County is facing an equally dire fiscal situation. As a result, there will
be no new County funding available for the College.
These cuts come at a time
when our enrollment is growing rapidly. We need more, not fewer, resources
to keep up with this demand and to ensure that the cost of a college
education remains affordable for those who need it most.
Further cuts could mean
tuition hikes in excess of 10 percent,
crowded classrooms and diminished services. For well over 50 years,
Montgomery College has been there for everyone who has come to our door –
but now we are faced with the prospect of turning people away.
Can we count on your
help? Any donation to the annual fund made before the close of
our fiscal year on June 30 would be greatly appreciated. These
funds support student scholarships, program development and enhancement,
and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff of
Montgomery College.
We need an additional $35,000
if we are to reach our annual fund goal of $96,875 by
June 30, 2003. We rely on our alumni to show their support of the
College by donating to the annual fund.

The
MC Alumni Association
would like to extend a special THANK YOU to
everyone who took the time to write a letter or send an e-mail to the
Montgomery County Council over the past few months asking that the
Council support the College
during these hard fiscal times in local and state government. Through
everyone's efforts, MC was able to restore much of the funding that
was eliminated from its proposed budget. Again, we are very
grateful to have so many wonderful alumni of MC who care about
the institution and are willing to take the time to help. You did
make a difference! For more information on how to become an active
advocate for MC, click here:

Did you
know that MC students who transferred to a four-year institution
before completing their graduation requirements may still earn their
associate's degree from the
College?
Under a program to encourage transfer students to complete their
associate's degrees, alumni of the College can transfer back to the
College as many as 15 credit hours for courses they took at a four-year
institution. Interested alumni may contact Ms. Getzandanner at the
Germantown Campus, 240-567-7822; Ms. Chen at the Rockville Campus,
240-567-5042; or Ms. Williams at the Takoma Park Campus, 240-567-1501. For
information on obtaining your MC transcript, go to
http://www.mc.cc.md.us/admissions/transcripts.html.

Now you can easily
support the
Takoma Park Campus Capital Campaign by shopping
at Safeway, simply register with
http://wwwescrip.com
and 3 percent of your
grocery purchases at Safeway will go directly to the Campaign.
Other credit and debit cards can be registered at their secure site so

who participate in this program.
Proceeds from these purchases will go to
an Endowment to assist students by
providing scholarships, books, uniforms, physical examinations for certain
programs, and daycare needs. By
registering your cards, when the card is scanned, a percentage of the sale
will electronically be sent to the Takoma Park account.
To register, go to the website at

The winner
of the Annual Fund April on-line giving contest was
Tsung H. Chuang. Mr. Chuang applied his gift to the
Takoma Park Campaign, and he received two tickets to an
Orioles baseball game. Since Mr. Chuang couldn't attend on the date that
the tickets were for, he was kind enough to pass them on to the runner-up in
the contest, Mr. Socrates Koutsoutis. Congratulations to Mr. Chuang, and
thanks to all who participated in the contest. Special thanks to Bob Hydorn
for donating the Orioles tickets.

If you're a
member of the MCT Federal
Credit Union (MC Alumni Association
members are
eligible for membership with MCT), then you need to know that MCT's Rockville
Financial Service Center, located at the corner of MD Rt. 355 and Redland
Road, will be closed from late May until Fall 2004 as they undergo
construction of the building. During construction, the drive-up facility next
door can service many of your financial needs. All other financial service
centers of MCT Federal Credit Union are not affected by this construction.
