Mark your calendar for the inaugural Art Stars Awards Thursday, October 21, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, for what promises to be an evening of lights, camera, and action!  The evening will celebrate the College's new School of Art and Design, and honor the "stars" responsible for the transformation of downtown Silver Spring into the County's first Arts and Entertainment District. Ida Ruben; Doug and Barbara Duncan; Jean Picker Firstenberg; John Hendricks; and Martha Gudelsky will receive the College's first "Art Stars" awards.

The event is co-chaired by Barbara Henry of Discovery and philanthropist Marcia Rickman.  The College is delighted to be working with Discovery, AFI and other local organizations and community leaders to plan an event that will undoubtedly become one of the County's annual signature "red carpet" affairs for the arts.  The evening will be dedicated to the memory of former MC Foundation Board member A. Mario Loiederman for his superior work in advancing the arts for the College and our community.

Charter individual and corporate sponsors include Norris and Joan Hekimian, The JBG Companies, Tower Construction, Comcast, Loiederman-Soltesz Associates, Arthur and Miriam Becker, Muriel Rakusin, Stonebridge Associates, Alan Meltzer, Charles and Becky Dukes, Chevy Chase Land Company and the Montgomery College Alumni Association.

Tickets are available at three levels: $250 (Supporter), $100 (Friend) and $50 (General).  For more information on this event or on how you can be a sponsor, please contact Isabel de la Puente at 301-299-5287 or e-mail isabel.delapuente@montgomerycollege.edu.

The Montgomery College Speakers’ Bureau is but one example of how the College reaches out to the community, offering educational and cultural opportunities for all its citizens. The Bureau comprises members of the College’s faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, and Alumni Association, as well as a special group of people called "friends of the College," who volunteer their time and expertise in this endeavor.

All speaking engagements are fulfilled without charge. Unless otherwise noted, these talks are designed for adult organizations or groups with an attendance of at least 15 individuals at meetings held in Montgomery County. With more than 160 topics, your group or organization is sure to find many topics that will interest them.

Because of the large number of requests, coupled with the speakers’ busy schedules, organizations will be limited to seven requests for a speaker per year. For more information or to receive the Bureau's brochure listing available topics, please e-mail Don Rejonis at don.rejonis@montgomerycollege.edu or call 240-567-7541.
