ALUMNI NOTICES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dr. Charlene R. Nunley, president of Montgomery College, has announced her plans to retire from the post, once the College’s Board of Trustees is able to complete a search for her successor. In a message to the college community, Dr. Nunley noted: “Montgomery College has been a centerpiece of my life for the past 27 years – including the last seven – in which I have enjoyed the great privilege of serving as your president. For me, the College has provided what I consider the career opportunity of a lifetime. That is both because of the powerful mission we are engaged in every day of changing the lives of our students for the better, and because all of you have afforded me the honor of working with such a dedicated, professional and amazingly talented set of colleagues.... I know that whoever succeeds me will be as fortunate as I am to lead at an institution that is blessed with the greatest administrative team, faculty, staff, students, alumni, community friends, and Board of Trustees that any college president could ever imagine.”
Dr. Nunley’s current contract expires on June 30, 2007. She indicated that once a new president is named, she would like to spend her remaining time with the College working with the MC Foundation and the College’s advancement team on “the important task of launching a major capital campaign to raise funds for scholarships, academic program enhancements, building projects, and other critical needs.”
Upon her retirement, Dr. Nunley will be eligible for membership in the Retirees Chapter of the Alumni Association.

There are several opportunities for you to help students who depend on scholarship support to pursue their education. Your gift can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of Montgomery College students. Here are a few of the ways you can help the College in its mission of changing lives:
The College relies on alumni and friends to show their support by donating to the Annual Fund – designed to raise critically needed funding for immediate use. We're counting on you: Only with the help of our alumni will we be able to raise the funding needed for scholarships, programs, new technology and equipment for our classrooms. Visit www.montgomerycollege.edu/giving to find out more, then make your tax-deductible donation to the Annual Fund today at https://ssb.montgomerycollege.edu/pls/eagle/hzskpldg.p_vt_giving.
Hurricane-displaced Gulf Coast college students who have relocated to Montgomery County receive tuition-free access to Montgomery College, as part of a broader effort by Montgomery County to assist those impacted by the crisis. The Montgomery College Foundation seeks to assist students with the cost of books, supplies, and other critical needs, through scholarships and other donated funds. Mentoring Opportunities: Do you want to make a difference in the lives and future of young people? Do you want to help students tackle the challenges and reap the rewards of achieving success in college? Do you want to promote the benefits of learning? If your answer to the above questions is an enthusiastic "yes," then you could be a Montgomery College student mentor. You can have a significant effect on a student's academic and personal development. You can help improve their grades, be a role model, and help set goals and targets. You can help students explore their interests and make informed educational and career decisions. Being a mentor is a way to contribute to the education and training of the next generation. It's a wonderful opportunity to engage directly with current students, become more involved with Montgomery College, and improve your own mentoring skills in the process. To learn more or to volunteer, please call the Lifelong Learning Institute at 240-567-7879.
Takoma Park/Silver Spring Student Development seeks both international and American alumni to participate as mentors in the International Buddy Program. The program provides a working relationship between current international students and past students who have either graduated or transferred from Montgomery College. Adjustment to a new community may be difficult, especially if there is a difference in language and culture. The International Buddy Program can help ease the transitional phase and help students adjust to the social, academic and cultural environment at Montgomery College. The primary mode of communication will be e-mail. For more information or to volunteer, contact Dr. Harold Barber or Eniola Olowofoyeku at 240-567-1480, or e-mail harold.barber@montgomerycollege.edu or eniola.olowofoyeku.@montgomerycollege.edu
If you have a country or major of study mentor/mentee preference, please indicate that in your e‑mail.

Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center presents Steel Pier, 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, March 1-4, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Performing Arts Center, Rockville. With music and lyrics written by the award-winning song writing team of John Kander and Fred Ebb and based on David Thompson’s book of the same name, this musical is set at the famous seaside attraction in 1930’s Atlantic City during a dance marathon. An aspiring group of young hopefuls are out to hot-step their way into fame and prizes via the honky-tonk world of marathon dancing. When her usual partner doesn’t show up, the champion dancer is paired up with a handsome pilot on leave. The two become infatuated with each other as the night whirls on. There’s only one problem—she’s secretly wed and he’s secretly dead. It’s a swinging trip back to the days of the dances like the Suzy-Q, the Turkey Trot, and the Shag.
