ALUMNI NOTICES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS 

The Montgomery College Alumni Association’s annual Alumni Awards Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 18, in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3 Research Court, Rockville, MD 20850. The Association will present the Milton F. (“Sonny”) Clogg Outstanding Alumni Achievement Awards to its 2008 honorees and induct four new members of the Montgomery College Athletic Hall of Fame. Alumni selected for the Sonny Clogg Award include four individuals: 

Ted Jarboe ’67 is a former part-time lecturer and adjunct professor, Montgomery County Fire Marshal, and instructor for the Department of Defense’s Domestic Preparedness Training Program. He is a member of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Association's Hall of Fame. He recently authored a safety handbook titled Elevator and Escalator Rescue: A Comprehensive Guide. 

Mark Thompson ’75 is head of discovery research at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (commonly known as Du Pont), developing environmentally safe herbicides and insecticides. He has been published in a variety of journals, has given many presentations and lectures at universities and conventions, and holds 20 patents. 

Mirna Ostchega ’90 teaches full-time in Montgomery College’s nursing program and advises students. She has a critical care certified specialty and spends some time each month at a hospital intensive care unit. She is pursuing her doctorate while teaching and instructing clinicals. 

Gordon Johnson ’99 spent 13 years practicing radiology in California hospitals and 9 years teaching it at 3 different universities. For 16 years, he was the senior physician for medical device regulation with the FDA. Since 1999, he has volunteered with the College’s Center for Teaching and Learning. 

New members of the Athletic Hall of Fame include three alumni and a long-time coach: 

Tyrone Neal ’73 twice won the JUCO Championships and Regional Championships while wrestling at MC. He was also the ACC Champion and Outstanding Wrestler for two years at Maryland. Neal has also spent many years coaching junior league and high school football teams. 

John Division ’83 was selected for the first team Region XIII and Maryland All-JUCO team and was MVP for the region while playing baseball at MC. He has served for five years as a manager and coach for baseball and basketball in Mount Airy. 

Harold Walker ’79 was named to the Maryland JUCO All-Conference basketball team and received an honorable mention for the NJCAA All-Region XX team. In 1979, he was a leader in individual scoring, field goal percentage, and rebounds. He spent two years after college coaching at First Baptist Academy in Orlando, Fla. 

Tom Bichy dedicated 37 years (1968–2005) to MC as a teacher, athletic director, and coach. He has been awarded the Silver Medallion and the status of Professor Emeritus by the Montgomery College Board of Trustees and is part of the NJCAA Region XX Hall of Fame and NJCAA Men’s Soccer Hall of Fame.

You saw it here first!  The Alumni Association’s 11th annual New York City Theatre Weekend is scheduled for November 8-10, 2008!  Seats are limited, as there will be only one bus this year — so get your reservation in quickly!  This year’s features Broadway show is A Catered Affair, the heartwarming and funny new musical about a 1950s Bronx mother’s efforts to give her only daughter the elaborate wedding she never had—and the bride never asked for.  Written by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and acclaimed songwriter John Bucchino and directed by Tony-winner John Doyle, it’s the wedding of the year and the musical of the season.   

The trip cost is $660 per person, based on double occupancy, which includes a lecture about New York and the Theatre, transportation, accommodations for two nights at the Hilton New York, and a top Broadway show.  Meals are not included.  Reservations and a deposit of $330 per person are due by May 28, 2008, with the balance of $330 due by September 22, 2008.  Single occupancy is $200 extra.

Scholarship Spotlight: The Universities at Shady Grove Board of Advisors and the Montgomery College Foundation celebrated 2007-08 scholarship recipients and the Donors & Board of Advisors-Kendall Service Awardees at a February 29 luncheon, where benefactors Cliff and Camille Kendall were honored.

Mentoring Opportunities: Takoma Park/Silver Spring Student Development seeks both international and American alumni to participate as mentors in the International Buddy Program. The program provides a working relationship between current international students and past students who have either graduated or transferred from Montgomery College. Adjustment to a new community may be difficult, especially if there is a difference in language and culture. The International Buddy Program can help ease the transitional phase and help students adjust to the social, academic and cultural environment at Montgomery College. The primary mode of communication will be e-mail, unless otherwise agreed upon by both parties. All who are interested in serving as mentors must be alumni of Montgomery College. The School of Art and Design at Montgomery College presents 50/50+100%, the School of Art and Design 50th Anniversary, now through April 27, in the gallery of the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Art Center, Takoma Park/Silver Spring. The Maryland School of Art began in Silver Spring in 1957; it later became Maryland College of Art and Design and, in 2004, the School of Art and Design at Montgomery College. The Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center presents Mr. Marmalade, 8 p.m. Thursday–Saturday, April 10–12, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in the Parilla Performing Arts Center, Rockville. In Noah Haidle’s disturbing comedy, four-year-old Lucy projects a skewed version of modern adult life onto her imaginary friend, Mr. Marmalade, showing the grown-up world through the eyes of an imaginative child. If you're in Montgomery County, you can watch the College on cable channel 10!  MC's Instructional Television presents a variety of news, movies, on-air classes, and fascinating informational programming around the clock.  

Montgomery College Television commemorates Holocaust Awareness month with a variety of educational programming. “Witness to the Holocaust” features the testimony of some of the survivors. These riveting documentaries can be seen beginning at midnight on Saturdays.  

“State of the Arts: Rhythm and Blue” reflects the theme of Montgomery College arts for the 2007–2008 academic year. The show covers three Rhythm and Blue events: the student performance of Chicago, the Communication Arts Technologies Department faculty art exhibition and the Music Department’s Scholarship Concert (including performances by the Jazztet and World Ensemble Latin Band). 9 p.m. Monday, April 7. 

“Conversations with Remarkable People” will feature Tania Rozmaryn, Holocaust survivor. Midnight on Sundays.

- “MC in Focus” is a weekly live news show produced by the students in the Communication Arts Technologies department on the Rockville Campus. Noon and 11:30 p.m. Fridays and 7:30 p.m. Mondays. 

- “Films of the Great White North” showcases some of the finest films produced by the National Film Board of Canada. This month’s features include “Toxic Trespass,” “Fatal Passage,” “Corporations in the Classrooms” and “Damage Done.” 9 p.m. Fridays.  Additionally, “My Son Shall Be Armenian” will air at 9 p.m. Thursday, April 3.
