ALUMNI NOTICES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
It’s not too late to sign up! The Alumni Association’s 11th annual New York City Theatre Weekend is scheduled for November 8-10, 2008! Seats are limited, as there will be only one bus this year — so get your reservation in quickly! A Catered Affair will be closing July 27; the Alumni Association has replaced it with the Tony Award-winning musical Gypsy. Loosely inspired by the story of Gypsy Rose Lee, this entertaining musical follows a family of Vaudeville-era touring performers and chronicles the shyest member’s hesitant rise to stardom.
The trip cost is $660 per person, based on double occupancy, which includes a lecture about New York and the Theatre, transportation, accommodations for two nights at the Hilton New York, and a top Broadway show. Meals are not included. A deposit of $330 per person is required with the reservation, with the remaining balance of $330 due by September 22, 2008. Single occupancy is $200 extra.

Scholarship Spotlight: Nita Farrell of Silver Spring, Maryland, generously contributed $50,000 to establish the Nita Farrell Women's Studies Endowed Scholarship. This gift will make education a reality for both men and women at Montgomery College. It will also put into practice the women's studies internship program, which had only been a dream until now. Mentoring Opportunities: Takoma Park/Silver Spring Student Development seeks both international and American alumni to participate as mentors in the International Buddy Program. The program provides a working relationship between current international students and past students who have either graduated or transferred from Montgomery College. Adjustment to a new community may be difficult, especially if there is a difference in language and culture. The International Buddy Program can help ease the transitional phase and help students adjust to the social, academic and cultural environment at Montgomery College. The primary mode of communication will be e-mail, unless otherwise agreed upon by both parties. All who are interested in serving as mentors must be alumni of Montgomery College. The Humanities Council of Montgomery County presents a Solo Exhibition for the winner of the 2008 Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award, now through July 6, in the gallery of the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Art Center, Takoma Park/Silver Spring. The reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21, and the gallery is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Admission free. Summer Dinner Theatre kicks off its 31st season with Evita, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, July 4 to 6, in the Theatre Arts Arena, Rockville. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical based on the life of Eva Peron follows her ascent from an impoverished childhood to a position as the most powerful woman in South America. Summer Dinner Theatre’s 31st season presents Beauty and the Beast, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, July 18 through August 3, in the Theatre Arts Arena, Rockville. Based on Disney’s version of the enchanting love story, this adaptation includes all the songs from the film plus a few new ones. Registration is available for Summer Baseball and T-Ball Camps on the Germantown Campus. Baseball Camp is for children ages 5–13 and runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 7–11, 14–18, 21–25, and July 28 to August 1. T-Ball is for ages 4–5 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, July 7–11 and 14–18. Tuition is $220 per week. Paul Peck Institute for American Culture and Civic Engagement presents Jefferson Cafes(TM) in July. The city of Rockville presents its annual 4th of July Celebration, 7 p.m. Friday, July 4, on the Rockville Campus. The festivities, including musical performances by the Fugitive Brass Quintet, the Rockville Concert Band, and classic rock band RedLine, will begin at 7 p.m.; fireworks will start at 9:30. The Maryland Humanities Council presents Chautauqua, 7 p.m. Tuesday–Friday, July 8–11, in an outdoor tent on the Germantown Campus. This year’s theme is “Civil Rights: Taking a Stand.” The series of “living history” portrayals will feature actors impersonating Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., George Corley Wallace, Jr., and Malcolm X through their clothing and speech. The audience will learn about these historical figures through the performances. Admission free. Campus Conversations is a 30-minute series that explores a variety of issues, events, and topics of interest to the Montgomery College community.
