Montgomery College has published the Spring/Summer Issue of the literary magazine, "Potomac Review." Journeys of many sorts are the theme for the new issue, which features Anca Nemoianu's winning entry in the 9th Annual F. Scott Fitzgerald Short Story Contest. Nemoianu teaches linguistics at the Catholic University of America in Washington.

This issue also includes photographs from the "Portraits of Life" exhibit at Montgomery College, which pays tribute to Holocaust survivors living in and around Montgomery County. Also featured are:

- An essay by Darcel Taylor, "Summer Storm," that takes a look at the relationship between creativity and mental illness.
- Local poet and writer Elisavietta Ritchie's poem, "Snow in Leningrad."
- Pit Menousek Pinegar's piece, "Filling in the Blank on Religion."
- Silver Spring writer Christopher Conlon's two poems, "Riding with Hitch" and "Political Poem."
- Arlington poet Mel Belin's contribution of "Twins."
- Aleria Jensen, formerly of Takoma Park, but now living and working in Alaska, who considers how to live with the steady drumbeat of gloom in the daily news in her poem, "Accounting."
- Local residents Tom Navratil, author of "Playing Arlington," and Jason Newport, "Spare Change," who have penned two profoundly Washington stories.
- An essay by former Editor Eli Flam, who looks back at more than 10 years of history for the "Potomac Review."

As always, artwork embellishes the pages of "Potomac Review."  Art Editor Ken Jassie and Photography Editor Anne Benolken, both faculty members at Montgomery College, have selected powerful images garnered from students and faculty as well as selections sent in by artists from other areas. Copies of "Potomac Review" are available at all Montgomery College bookstores, at the Writer's Center in Bethesda, and by subscription.  For information, visit the Potomac Review web page, www.montgomerycollege.edu/potomacreview.

Lifelong Learning Institute presents a Black Memorabilia class featuring "Antiques Roadshow" Appraiser Philip Merrill. Merrill will teach a fall semester class for Montgomery College's Lifelong Learning Institute.  The class, "Black Memorabilia as the Storyteller of African American History," will examine specific artifacts and their individual stories. Black memorabilia, defined as artifacts or objects that accompanied Africans and their descendents along their journey to and throughout America, can be a source of learning about African Americans and their joys and sorrows, victories and defeats, accomplishments and contributions, in ways that no history book can.  Merrill, a nationally known collector of black memorabilia, author and historian specializing in African American history, is the owner of Nanny Jack & Company, located in Baltimore, Md. The four-session class will be held Wednesday evenings, 7 to 9 p.m. from Oct. 19 to Nov. 9, 2005, at the Rockville campus.  The class, a non-credit continuing education class (ILL371), costs $128; Maryland residents age 60 and over only pay the $64 fee.  All non-Maryland residents must pay an out-of-state fee of $120.  For further information, contact Gary Hong, 240-567-7869, or e-mail gary.hong@montgomerycollege.edu.

ALUMNI VOLUNTEER AND GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

There are several opportunities for you to help students who depend on scholarship support to pursue their education. Your gift can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of Montgomery College students. Here are a few of the ways you can help the College in its mission of changing lives:

- The College relies on alumni and friends to show their support by donating to the Annual Fund - and July 1 marks a brand new Annual Fund year! The Annual Fund is designed to raise critically needed funding which can be put to immediate use.  We're counting on you: Only with the help of our alumni will we be able to raise the funding needed for scholarships, programs, new technology and equipment for our classrooms. Visit www.montgomerycollege.edu/giving to find out more, then make your tax-deductible donation to the Annual Fund today at https://mconline.mc.cc.md.us/pls/eagle/hzskpldg.p_vt_giving

- Getting tired of your old car?  Please remember the Montgomery College Foundation's Automobile Donation Program. The Montgomery College Foundation will accept 1993 vehicles or newer, and only if there is no damage to the body of the car. All donated cars will be sold at automobile auctions by a licensed wholesaler, and the proceeds will support Montgomery College students and programs through the Annual Fund. For more information, contact Carrie Hurd, 240-567-4028, or e-mail carrie.hurd@montgomerycollege.edu.

Are you considering your options for estate planning? For more information, see the Committee's letter at www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/instadrv/foundation/pgcspring2005.doc, or call the Development office at 240-567-4009.

Montgomery College alumni donate the most dollars among community colleges nationwide that report gifts to the Council for Aid to Education. We have been steadily been moving up the ranks since 1999 (moving up from number 12 in 1999, number 10 in 2000, and number 4 in 2001), and our alumni have held the number-one position for the past three years. Way to go alumni!

Mentoring Opportunities: Do you want to make a difference in the lives and future of young people? Do you want to help students tackle the challenges and reap the rewards of achieving success in college? Do you want to promote the benefits of learning? If your answer to the above questions is an enthusiastic "yes," then you could be a Montgomery College student mentor. You can have a significant effect on a student's academic and personal development. You can help improve their grades, be a role model, and help set goals and targets. You can help students explore their interests and make informed educational and career decisions. Being a mentor is a way to contribute to the education and training of the next generation. It's a wonderful opportunity to engage directly with current students, become more involved with Montgomery College, and improve your own mentoring skills in the process. To learn more or to volunteer, please call the Lifelong Learning Institute at 240-567-7879.

Takoma Park Student Development seeks international alumni to participate as mentors in the International Buddy Program. The program provides a working relationship between current international students and past international students who have either graduated or transferred from Montgomery College. Adjustment to a new community may be difficult, especially if there is a difference in language and culture. The International Buddy Program can help ease the transitional phase and help students adjust to the social, academic and cultural environment at Montgomery College. The primary mode of communication will be e-mail. For more information or to volunteer, contact Dr. Harold Barber or Stephanie Waller at 240-567-1480 or e-mail harold.barber@montgomerycollege.edu or stephanie.waller@montgomerycollege.edu.

If you have a country or major of study mentor/mentee preference, please indicate that in your e‑mail.
