Welcome to Montgomery College's Biotechnology Program

Our mission is to provide state of the art educational opportunities in applied Biotechnology/Bioscience. This mission will be accomplished using integrated laboratory and theoretical exercises, with an emphasis on student participation in the laboratory component of the program. The skill set taught is designed to be relevant to the current needs of the Biotechnology community.

The program focus is the development of basic skills and thought processes critical to success in a laboratory environment. The relevance of instructional methods have been developed and are regularly updated with input from the Biotechnology Program advisory committee (composed of experts from the local Biotechnology community) and by ongoing discussions with representatives at all levels from the Biotechnology Community.

Specifically:

1. The Biotechnology program will provide interested and motivated novice students with a skill set that prepares them for immediate, productive employment at local Biotechnology companies upon successful completion of the required coursework in the program.

2. The Biotechnology Program will provide supplemental training and skill enhancement for current members of the Biotechnology community. The training can be acquired either as part of the credit (semester long) program or non-credit, workforce development (1-5 day workshops) program. Montgomery College will provide documentation which verifies the successful completion of such training for either option.

3. For students interested in continuing their education, the Biotechnology program will prepare them for academic success as they pursue a four year Bachelor of Science degree or beyond.

4. The Biotechnology Program will strive to serve as a resource and partner for the community at large, including the Biotechnology industry, other educational institutions and the general public.

Examples include presentations by the Biotechnology faculty to interested local high school classes and the non credit, continuing education three hour presentation entitled "Biotechnology for the Maryland Citizen".

Equipment and Facilities

We have two dedicated Biotechnology Laboratories at the Germantown campus - one is located in Room 405 of the High Technology and Science Building (HTSC) and is dedicated primarily to Nucleic Acid and Protein Methods instruction. The other Biotechnology laboratory is located in Room 240 of the Science Building and is primarily dedicated to Cell Culture and Immunological Methods instruction. Both laboratories are dedicated to the Biotechnology Program and as such access is restricted to students currently enrolled in the Biotechnology Program.
