Ajax features

ColdFusion 8 can easily provide data to existing Ajax applications and frameworks. You can use simple tags to access a large library of prebuilt Ajax user interface components such as rich text editors, data grids, tree controls, tab navigators, and more.

• Ajax user interface controls — If you are not currently familiar with Ajax development techniques, ColdFusion 8 delivers a large set of user interface controls that leverage Ajax techniques. For example, you can enhance your web application with rich text editors, data grids, and dropdown list boxes — all of which can be bound to data on the ColdFusion server and updated without reloading the HTML page. There are also many page layout and behavior controls, including popup windows, tab navigators, tree controls, and panels. All of these rich Ajax controls can be implemented with easy to use CFML tags and functions, requiring no knowledge of JavaScript or other Ajax elements.
• Ajax proxy for data exchange — If you are already using an Ajax framework such as Spry, ColdFusion 8 makes it simple to exchange data between the Ajax client and the ColdFusion server. With a simple CFML tag, your applications can create a JavaScript proxy that represents a ColdFusion component (CFC) on the server. It manages the communication between the client and server and provides several functions to simplify and manage the resulting data. What Flash® Remoting does for ColdFusion and Adobe Flex or Flash applications, the Ajax proxy does for Ajax applications.
• Ajax logging and debugging — ColdFusion 8 even makes it easier to debug Ajax applications, with an optional floating window that displays information and error messages as calls are made between client and server. In this logging and debugging window, you can see what CFCs are being accessed, what variables are being passed, and additional information, including the structure of complex data variables.

NET integration

Adobe ColdFusion is a Java application, so ColdFusion applications run on leading J2EE application servers as compiled Java bytecode. This Java DNA makes it easy for you to natively integrate existing Java assets/objects into your ColdFusion applications. But what if you're developing with Microsoft .NET In previous versions of ColdFusion, there was no native way to integrate those assets into a ColdFusion application. You could use web services to integrate ColdFusion and .NET, but that technique often suffered from poor performance or compatibility problems. ColdFusion 8 software solves this problem by introducing native .NET integration that lets you access Microsoft .NET assembly classes as CFML objects. With ColdFusion 8, now you can leverage .NET objects as easily as Java assets.

The .NET integration capabilities of ColdFusion 8 do not rely on .NET remoting or web services, so no changes to existing .NET assets are required. The .NET classes that your application uses do not have to be local, so your ColdFusion application can access .NET components that are on remote systems, even systems that are outside your firewall. Also, the ColdFusion system does not require .NET runtime software installed to use remote .NET components, so ColdFusion 8 running on a UNIX , Linux , Solaris, or Mac OS X system can access and use .NET assemblies elsewhere on the network. ColdFusion 8 even converts data types automatically, so you don't have to take any special steps to ensure correct conversion among ColdFusion, Java, and .NET data types.

Microsoft Exchange Server integration

Many organizations rely on Microsoft Exchange servers for their enterprise messaging, calendaring, contact list, and task management. Historically, ColdFusion has been able to send and receive e-mail from Exchange servers, but other Exchange Server functions have not been accessible from ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML). Now in Adobe ColdFusion 8 software, several new tags make it easy to interact with Microsoft Exchange servers — not only to send, get, and manage e-mail, but also to create, get, and manage calendar events, contacts, and tasks.

E-mail messages, calendar events, contacts, and tasks can all be programmatically controlled with ColdFusion 8. With this new capability, you can:

• Build a customized Exchange Server web client interface
• View information about upcoming tasks
• Create mailing lists based on contact entries
• Automatically add tasks to users' task lists based on web application events
• Dynamically schedule meetings and appointments
• Show and manage meeting attendee availability

ColdFusion 8 also allows you to connect to an Exchange server with a persistent connection that lasts until you explicitly close it. Persistent connections allow you to use a single connection for multiple tasks, which saves the processing overhead of opening and closing a separate connection for each interaction with the Exchange server. These connections can also be stored in a ColdFusion persistent scope, like the application scope, for more convenient coding.

Interactive line debugger

To help you see what's happening in your application as code is executed, ColdFusion 8 introduces the interactive line debugger. Use it to set breakpoints, step over, into, or out of code, inspect variables, and view ColdFusion log files. This is particularly helpful when writing code that does not produce HTML output, such as ColdFusion components (CFCs), SOAP web services, Ajax applications, and Adobe Flex or Flash applications that use Flash Remoting. The interactive line debugger is installed as part of an entire collection of Eclipse plug-ins you can use when developing ColdFusion applications in Adobe Flex Builder or Eclipse.
