Course Description

A study of electronic commerce revenue models and business strategies, involving the various network-based transactions among producers, consumers, businesses and institutions. Topics include: legal, business and marketing strategies, online revenue models, web site administration, the history and challenges of e-commerce, organizational design and infrastructure, an overview of sever hardware and software, security concerns, and the risks and benefits of e-commerce. Emphasis will be on practical applications and contemporary issues. (3 semester hours)

Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prequisites: None, however CA272 is strongly recommended.
Assessment levels:  EN101/101A, MA 091, RD120. 

Goals and/or Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:

Development and enhancement of non-technical skills

  • Speak and write about the course topics with sufficient proficiency
  • Apply critical thinking to a variety of topics in the course

Security & Network Basics

  • Analyze and identify potential security threats and risks and recommend possible defenses
  • Explain networking basics as they relate to the Internet and local area networks

Web Hosting, Server Hardware and Software

  • Compare, recommend, and select basic server hardware and software
  • Research, compare, and recommend Web hosting and domain name registration options

Foundation of Electronic Commerce

  • Describe the benefits and limitations of e-commerce
  • Describe the challenges of e-commerce and the role it serves in our economy

E-Business Models

  • Identify and describe the various e-commerce models, including shopping cart technology, online shopping malls, auction and portal models, and dynamic pricing models

Marketing E-Business

  • Understand and discuss the unique nature of marketing and e-business, including affiliate programs, e-customer relationships, and e-mail promotion

Legal and Ethical Issues

  • Understand and discuss privacy and security issues as well as other legal areas of concern
  • Identify cybercrime
  • Discuss the issue of internet taxation
  • Discuss the globalizing and international impact of e-commerce

Social and political Issues

  • Understand and describe the social and health concerns of the Internet and e-commerce
  • Address the topics of online communities and online charities
  • Describe the impact of e-commerce and the internet on information availability

Accessibility

  • Discuss the accessibility of e-commerce to people with a variety of impairments
  • Discuss accessibility issues from business perspective
