CA276 Dynamic HTML with JavaScript

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to Dynamic HTML and explore many of the mechanisms for creating dynamic web pages using JavaScript. This course will provide a brief examination of the principles of structured programming and then apply these principles to a variety of Web pages that can be enhanced using JavaScript. Topics will include forms verification, maintaining information between pages, scripted animation. 3 semester hours

Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prequisites: CA272 or consent of the department.

 

Goals and/or Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to

  • Development and enhancement of non-technical skills
    • Speak and write about the course topics with sufficient proficiency
    • Apply critical thinking to a variety of topics in the course
  • Introduction to structured programming
    • · Describe the three flow control structures used in structured programming and demonstrate how they can be used in a program
  • Incorporating JavaScript inside of HTML
    • · Describe the difference between code placed in the "head" an the "body" of the document, and how that affects the timing of the execution of that code
  • Event processing
    • · Identify recognizable events in JavaScript and create code that responds to those events
  • User defined functions
    • · Create user defined functions and pass values with the function call when required
  • Document object model
    • · Use the Document Object Model to identify individual elements within the HTML
  • Cascading Style Sheets
    • · Apply a Cascading Style Sheet fo format groups of common elements to create an interactive page
  • Dynamic HTML
    • · Using the DOM, access a specific element and modify the style applied to the element to create an interactive page
  • Forms validation
    • · Use the DOM to access specific elements of a form and check for valid and complete information
  • State maintenance
    • Maintain user information through cookies or invisible frames as a site is navigated
  • JavaScript animation
    • ·Use the DOM to access specific objects on a page and animate the object through the manipulation of the X, Y and Z coordinates
  • Cross browser scripting
    • Detect the browser being used (Navigator or Internet Explorer) and create code that is functional in that browser
