WELCOME MESSAGE
DS 107 - First Year Seminar,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Montgomery College (MC) and of online learning. Online learning is relatively new, but becoming more common. DS 107 is a great way to learn about taking online courses at MC and about what it takes to be a successful college student. The first lesson is, because we can't see one another, your instructor won't be able to guess whether or not this course is working for you unless you tell me. Don't be afraid to ask questions - ask, ask, ask.
The online version of DS 107 has been taught at Montgomery College for several semesters. The most successful students have been those who sign into the course the first day, carefully work through the Orientation module, and pay close attention to all the course requirements and deadlines. This is not a self-paced course. You will have to turn in assignments on a regular basis. Getting behind in an online course is "the kiss of death." Consider an on campus section if you are a procrastinator.
To read more about online learning, go the the Online Student Success Center at:
Designed to assist the student in adjusting to college. Includes academic and student services available, study habit techniques, career and educational planning, and adjustment concerns. Especially intended for students during their initial semester of enrollment. One hour lecture/discussion each week.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
There are no course prerequisites.
TEXTBOOK
None.
ONLINE REQUIREMENTS
We will cover one module per week. You should expect to spend no less than 3 hours per week working on this course. That includes reading website materials, participating on the discussion board, and completing other assignments. Taking an online course provides some flexibility as to when you actually complete the course requirements. However, the assignments for each module have specific deadlines. Some students have said that the hardest part of this course is remembering to get online and do the work.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED USING MICROSOFT WORD OR RTF FILES. All campus computer labs have Microsoft Word if you don't have it on your home computer.
ON-CAMPUS REQUIREMENTS
Mandatory participation at a one hour orientation session. Please refer to the DL course schedule for exact times.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
You are required to attend a private counseling session to review your educational plan. I will accept a phone consultation.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I have four years of experience with facilitating this course. Former students remain in contact with me for continued assistance with counseling and advising information.
