WebCT Basics
Faculty typically choose to supplement on campus courses with either MyMC (student portal) Course Tools or with a WebCT supplemental website. A MyMC workshop is delivered by the Center for Teaching and Learning. A WebCT Basics workshop is delivered by Office of Distance Learning. An online version of this workshop will be developed and provided as a self-paced, online option that includes a competency demonstration (available January '09). Upon completion of the competency demonstration, faculty will request and be provided a WebCT supplemental course site. Faculty with previous online teaching experience can complete the competency demonstration and obtain a supplemental WebCT course site without participating in either the online or on campus WebCT Basics workshops.
The goals are to provide a means for faculty to incorporate technology into on campus courses and to provide an opportunity for faculty to develop technical fluency prior to participating in training for teaching fully online or blended courses.
Common Courses
Common Courses address the needs of faculty who want to teach a pre-built online course. It is currently available only in disciplines that have developed a common course. Instruction in online pedagogy and minimal instruction about the course management system is the training required to teach a common course. Currently, the only way faculty can teach online without developing their own online course is to participate in the common course program. In the common course model, a course is developed by a lead teacher from each of the three campuses. Once developed, a common course can easily be taught by adjunct or full time faculty who do not want to develop an online course, but would like to teach online. The lead instructor, along with the instructional designer/trainer assume responsibility for training faculty to become effective online instructors. The Office of Distance Learning awards ESH to the lead common course instructor to maintain and revise the course as well as to support all faculty who teach a common course. More information about common course development can be found at http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/distance/handbook/commoncourse.html
The goals of the Common Course are to increase the pool of online faculty and to increase the number of high enrollment sections available to students while maintaining quality and consistency of course design. Current common courses are Introduction to Sociology, English Composition 1 & 2, and several Health courses. A future goal is to develop a training program for other faculty who want to become online instructors, but do not want to develop an online course.
Online Teaching with WebCT
Online Teaching with WebCT is the current training course that prepares faculty who want to develop a course for online or blended delivery. Faculty take a seven week blended Online Teaching with WebCT course. The face-to-face weekly sessions include instruction about how to use WebCT, the course management system. The online portion of the course requires reading about online pedagogy, participating in online discussion and submitting assignments that lead faculty through the decisions needed to develop a prototype course module.
The goals of Online Teaching with WebCT are to develop a pool of online teachers who have the skills to transform courses they teach on campus to the online environment. It is expected that the instructors who have developed effective online courses will also become effective online instructors.
Advanced Online Teaching – Quality Matters
Advanced Online Teaching is a six week fully online course for faculty who have completed Online Teaching with WebCT (or participated in ATQ) and have taught online for at least one semester. This course will provide an opportunity for faculty to continue improving their course design and online teaching skills. Faculty will review their online course using the Quality Matters rubric. At the end of the course, faculty will have developed a course improvement plan. This course will be offered for the first time during Fall '08.
The goals of Advanced Online Teaching - Quality Matters are to provide an advanced training option that is available any time, any place and that will provide an opportunity for faculty to improve their online course design and online teaching skills.
Advanced WebCT Workshops
Several new advanced on campus workshops and open labs have been developed. Check the PDS for current offerings. Some examples are: Planning Online Discussions, WebCT Gradebook, Surveys and Quizzes, and Assignment Tool.
Master Online Teacher Certificate
Faculty who want to further develop their online teaching and course development skills can participate in the Master Online Teacher (MOT) certificate program offered fully online from the Illinois Online Network (ION). The College has developed a partnership with ION. Faculty at the College can take courses at reduced tuition rates.
The goal of making the Master Online Teaching Certificate available is to develop exceptional online instructors who will mentor novice online instructors. The framework within which this training will occur is a Distance Learning Faculty Fellow program, however all faculty who have completed Online Teaching with WebCT and taught online for at least one semester may take courses in the MOT program.
