As we discussed in the library instruction session, here are some reminders about how to locate the books, articles, and Web sites you will need for your research.

1. MC Library Catalog

Locating Musical Recordings: To find a CD, you will need to:

  1. click on the "Set One Limit" box to the right of the search box,
  2. select either Recorded Music All Campuses , or CD's Rockville
  3. and
  4. set "Select Search Type:" to Keyword Boolean .
  5. Enter a search expression in the "Enter Search Terms:" box.

Here are some sample searches using keywords and Boolean operators:

medieval AND music
Machaut
firebird AND Stravinsky
italy AND opera
Ellington and jazz
african AND jazz

Each volume thoroughly covers the music of a different continent.
International Dictionary of Black Composers REF ML105 .I5 1999
Truly international in scope, this reference book covers Black composers of classical and
popular music.

Classical

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians REF. ML100 .N48 2001
The best place to start looking for information on classical music.
The New Grove Dictionary of Opera REF. ML 102. O6 N5 1992
Extensive coverage of opera composers, arias, choruses, performers etc.

Jazz and Blues

All Music Guide to Blues REF. ML 156.4 .B6 A55 1999
Arranged by performer or group, this title covers Blues from its beginnings to the present.
The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz REF ML 102 .J3 F39 1999
This book contains brief biographies of a large number of Jazz musicians.
The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz REF ML102 .J3 N48 2001
A three volume set that covers Jazz extensively.
The Oxford Encyclopedia of Jazz REF ML3507 .094 2000
This book is a history of jazz from its beginnings in African and European music to the present.

Pop and Folk

American Musical Traditions REF ML3551 .A53 2002
An outstanding set of books which cover the folk music, including jazz, blues and Latino music,
of many American ethnic groups.
Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Popular Musicians Since 1990 REF ML 102 .P66 B35 2003
Biographies of contemporary musicians and musical groups.
Encyclopedia of Popular Music REF ML102 .P66 G84 1998
This seven volume set offers extensive coverage of popular music. Most of the entries are
biographical; however there are essays on important CD’s and other topics.
MusicHound Rock: the Essential Album Guide REF ML 156.4 .R6 M87 1999b
Although dated, this book might be useful for its discussions of important rock albums.
Rap Whoz Who: The World of Rap Music, Performers, Producers, Promoters REF ML400 .S17 1996
Again dated, but this book does offer biographies of important figures in the Rap music world.

Encyclopedia of World Biography
Biographical information on notable people from every part of the world and all time periods.
Project Muse
Scholarly journals in the humanities including many on music related topics.
Academic Search Premier
The College's largest database.
Expanded Academic ASAP
To sort by relevance, user must select Relevance in blue menu bar before starting search.

Results can be sorted by date or relevance. To print, use the button within the database.

Music Library Online Resources (University of Virginia)
Libraries, research centers, and Web sites devoted to selected composers.
DW3 - Classical Music Resources (Duke University)
