EN002 SYLLABUS
Basic English II (EN002) is the second-level developmental course designed to improve writing skills. EN002 emphasizes writing well-developed paragraphs and multi-paragraph essays, including study of sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. Successful completion of the course includes passing the EN002 Competency Exam. EN002 is intended for native speakers of English who need further preparation prior to taking credit courses in English. PRE- or COREQUISITES: RD089 (which requires an Accuplacer reading score of 53-65) except for those students exempted from this requirement by initial placement testing. New and continuing students with reading scores below the RD089 level are not eligible for EN002. Also required is an Accuplacer English score of 80-89.9. Lecture hours will be used for calculating student load and tuition (five hours lecture each week, plus required laboratory work). NO CREDIT.
1. to write unified, coherent paragraphs developing an idea expressed in a topic sentence and multi-paragraph essays with a clear thesis statement. These assignments will be written both in and out of class.
2. to read college essays and summarize the main idea, recognizing the major supporting points.
3. to pass quizzes and tests of basic English language skills.
4. to recognize and compose papers in familiar writing patterns, such as example and illustration, description, narration, process analysis, definition, comparison and contrast, classification and division, and cause and effect.
1. One or more papers each week, making a minimum in a semester of seven essays. Essays should include well-developed planning sheets. Additionally, students may write journal or notebook entries. Essays, including revised and corrected versions, will be included in the Montgomery College English Composition Folder. The completed folder is required at the end of the semester.
2. Exercises in sentence basics, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
3. Tests and quizzes covering assigned study material.
4. Reading assignments of college-level essays.
5. Writing Center assignments on individual exercises.
6. Homework for each class session, typically requiring two out-of-class study hours for each hour spent in the classroom.
7. Additional course requirements as assigned by the instructor.
8. Basic English Competency Test in both sentence skills and writing. For students who qualify to pass EN002 by fulfilling all other course requirements (#'s 1-7), scores on the Competency Test determine students' next English placement.

Students are expected to attend all class sessions. The instructor may fail students if they are absent more than the equivalent of one week of class. If students must miss a class, they are responsible for any work assigned or completed during their absence. Students should not expect their instructor to take time from the regularly scheduled class to tell students about work they have missed. Instructors are available during office hours or by appointment.
Students should hand in all work on time. The instructor might not accept late work. If the instructor accepts late work, students should not expect to earn full credit for this work.
At the end of the course, students will receive one of four marks:
Letter grades in EN002 carry no college credit and do not affect GPA.
