CLASS ATTENDANCE:

The class will meet for orientation in January on the Rockville Campus. There will be two, identical, orientation sessions; you may attend whichever one is most convenient for you. During the orientation, we will go over the procedures necessary for creating your assignments, navigating the course website, submitting work, taking assessments and quizzes, meeting course deadlines, and receiving/reviewing graded assignments.

There are two other times that you will need to come to school in person: during midterms week (March 4-7) and during finals week (May 6-9), to take your exams. I will notify you of times when you can take the exams in the classroom with me. Alternatively, I will also permit you (by appointment) to take the exam in the Assessment Center.

POLICY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating, plagiarism and/or other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Refer to the Code of Conduct section of the Student Handbook.

Any occurrence of academic dishonesty, including cheating, plagiarism, submitting someone else's work, or helping another student to cheat, or any violation of the Code of Conduct will result in a zero for that assignment as well as an automatic 10-point reduction of your total semester grade.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

Assignments and announcements will be posted regularly at the course website at http://distance.montgomerycollege.org. Log into the site using the directions on the main page. If you used the system previously, you should use the password you set up earlier. If you are new to the system, use your date of birth, as instructed. Check the site regularly, as you are responsible for all posted information. Assignments should generally be submitted online. Check the instructions carefully as to whether to e-mail or upload to the dropbox. Some assignments must be done on paper with red pen (proofreading marks). If you have access to a color scanner and are able to scan your paper into a jpeg or gif format (check to make sure it is legible and clear), you may submit the file as an attachment. Otherwise, you may leave the paper in an envelope on my office door. All assignments, whether submitted on paper or electronically, must have your name on the top left corner of the page (if word processed, put your name in a header). Assignments turned in after their due date will lose 20 points for each calendar day late.

HARDWARE, SOFTWARE, and PROCEDURES:

A computer with Internet access is necessary for getting and submitting the assignments, doing the assessments, and taking the quizzes. You will need either Netscape Navigator, version 4 or higher or Internet Explorer, version 4 or higher. This software can be downloaded free from the Internet. (If you use America Online to access the Internet, you will need to dial up, then start a separate Netscape or Explorer browsing window, as some assignments will not work properly in the AOL window.) You will need Microsoft Word 97, 2000 or XP for the word-processing assignments.

You will also have access to the campus computer labs, which have all the necessary hardware and software for the class activities. Locations, hours, rules and guidelines are published by the Academic Computing Team.

POLICIES:

Students should refer to the Student Handbook for the official wording of all academic, classroom, and collegewide policies. Students are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct of the Student Handbook.

AUDIT POLICY:

STATEMENT ON DISABILITIES:

If you have a disability that will require accommodations, please see me after class or during my office hours. We should be able to work out whatever arrangements are necessary, including special seating, testing, or other accommodations. If you have not already contacted the Disability Support Services office (CAB 122), [Rockville: (240) 567-5058; TDD (301)294-9672] please do so to obtain a letter authorizing your accommodations.
